Replacement shrubs and trees in Maryland

Annapolis, MD

Hi there - I purchased a property that has a beautiful four season garden in place. I am a novice gardener, and would like some suggestions for replacement of plants/shrubs that have died. The more unique the better. There was a Mugo Pine in the front of the house surrounded by perennials. What is a nice replacement if I didn't want another Mugo - I was thinking Picea Little Gem Spruce. Also, a Weeping Hemlock was cut down to give a nieghbor better water views (this property is on the Bay in Annapolis) and I would like to keep the view open for them, but plant something moderate and Evergreen in the space that is there. Also, I really like Sour Wood trees and was wondering what is the best location to plant one. any suggestions would be great! Thank you in advance.

I can't help you with that particular tree, but if you head down Riva Road to Riva Gardens, there's a good chance Dianne will have it or order it for you.
She's having a 50% off sale right now and always carries some nice stuff.
Plus, their produce is a great snack while trying to talk yourself out of the stuff you never knew you needed until you see it there.

Check out the place I just posted about in Maryland. They sure do have a terrific selection of trees and shrubs and I thought their prices were really good.

I would suggest Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville, MD. http://www.homesteadgardens.com/index.php It's just down the road from you in Annapolis and they have terrific inventory at their nursery. I'm sure they would be able to help you out.

Here is a link to info on sourwood trees-

Try the DG PlantFiles for info and a list of nurseries selling sourwood- just type sourwood in the "common name" space.

For an evergreen shrub how about oakleaf hydrangea? Mine keeps its leaves through most of the winter. I have the dwarf variety, "Pee Wee". Grows to about 4ft high and 6ft wide.

Also check out Inkberry (Ilex glabra) in the DG PlantFiles. It is an evergreen shrub that is native to our area and provides winter food for birds. Link to more info on inkberry-
