Well, you hid this one from me, or it would have been in the back of my truck too!LOL
Hope someone can help you name it. Sure is a pretty!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Silly, it was in the back of your truck! It is the iris we got from over on the side of the house by the air conditioner. She is a beauty isn't she!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

You have got to be kidding! I'm going to see that pretty thing growing in my garden! oh mY, i CAN'T eVEN tYPe
i'm eXCITeD!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Yep...even if we don't know her name...lol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Are you 100% sure it's Japanese. Looks like Louisiana to me.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

ditto

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

That is a LA and it looks like either Sea Wisp or Blue Bonnet Sue or Noble Moment to me. Sea Wisp is not in PlantFiles but I have private pics of it I can show you. If you have a pic in the daylight that's as good as that one I can probably ID it for you.
Debbie

I can email you pics of Sea Wisp but they don't belong to me and the person doesn't want them here. If you can hang on until March, I've got some Sea Wisp that will bloom.

I haven't started the LA iris part of this site but it will be extensive this spring.

I reminds me of this Louisiana iris from Dutch Gardens - no name came with it.

This is the only other one I can find it is not a close up though...sorry. I will see if the tag is still there tomorrow with ANY info at all..LOL I am tending to agree it does look like a LA Iris. I didn't have those up until this past year, so they are new to as well. Thought I had a Japanese too...LOL but I guess not. I have a yellow and white one too..I guess in the spring I can take pictures and get ids for both...now I need to get some JP Iris too! Thanks for you help!

Jap. iris have fatter petals

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Well, maybe the yellow and white one is a Jp Iris..it is disappointing to think you have something you don't even though the one I have is beautiful! Thanks.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

look at PlantFiles of Bayou Short Stuff. see if it looks familiar.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I think maybe it is Lake Sylvia...http://www.iriscitygardens.com/lairis4.html
what do you think?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

JanetS - I'll dmail you.

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

Hey DMJ do you have the reg LA iris the one that grows wild there Regards Paul

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Paul I have about 75 LA iris cultivars and most of the native american species. Are you thinking of the one that was found near Matagorda Bay? Where is my journal with that name, I'll post when I find it. Here it is, big Tex?

Lake Sylvia is darker purple in my opinion and in my garden:

Actually the color looks the same to me but the signals look a little different...so I don't know if that matters or not...

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Well, I found the markers, both were labeled Japanese Iris Iris kaempferi (I. ensata) after examining the leaves I believe both are indeed the LA Iris instead...LOL What a surprise...They are in partial sun for the most part, wonder if I should move them since they are LA's instead...any ideas? Thanks so much for your help!

Another question...I have a new TB iris bed and some of the newer tubers are getting holes, looks like what we call rollie pollies are around them...do they eat iris tubers? If so what can I do for them...thanks.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Maybe a child at the nursery switched the tags. I've even seen kids do that and the parents thought it was funny. Obviously they weren't addicted to gardening...

LA's need a minimum of 6 hrs winter sun to bloom--obviously yours is getting enough. I clearly admit I don't know a darned thing about any iris other than LA's or native species. And spome of the native species not much if they aren't from the south. =)
Debbie

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Well, the tree around them loose their leaves so they do get sun during the Winter months. Maybe you can tell me if this root is LA iris...I received them today in a trade and can't reach the sender...

the one iam looking for is just a deep common LA iris it gets about 2 feet tall blooms around late april early may Paul lol thats a deep purple

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I really can't tell from the pic--maybe the lights hitting them weird?

Ok--these aren't the best of pics but I have an area out front (not where most of my LA's are located) that is a "holding pen" for a group of unidentified LA Iris cultivars I got from a relative in New Orleans a few years back (thank goodness I got them when I did--but that's another story--I'm working on their ID's--they are all purple/dk. blue which makes it difficult). These are hasily taken pics and are very small rhyzomes but they are LA iris rhyzomes. If you can compare them to your ones on the left of yours....

LA Iris grow in the direction they are planted, that means they grow out from the end with the leaves and the roots. You plant them in the direction you want them to expand--they do "travel a foot or so per season for me.

Well Paul, that covers alot of La Iris cultivars--lol--but I have a lot of them. We'll talk about this after helping Janet.

Here's the other pic--they ARE PITIFUL looking plants but perhaps will help. Top view looking down.

Sunshine (lots of it) and water (lots of it) for both Louisiana and Japanese irises.

Could it be Black Gamecock Louisiana iris that you want phicks?

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

Nope

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Maybe something about in this color range Paul? lol
