Wanted: help with moss in a rock garden

Lafayette, LA

I need all the information I can get on growing moss. I have tons of it growing on the ground in my back yard and have been transplanting it to a rock garden. What do I need to do to keep it alive and looking good. I would also like to see it spread. Any tricks of the trade I should know about?

What kind of moss do you have?

I'm sorry. I don't know the name of it. It grows on the ground and the roots of trees in my yard.

Here's a picture of two diferen't kinds (I think) growing in my yard.

The one on the right looks like what I have. I thought it was a cushion moss. The two native species here are Leucobryum, which should be whitish green or greyish green. Whatever we have is prettier.
Could the on on the right one be one of these?

Wish I could help with the id but I don't know much of anything about moss other than it doesn't grow well for me. Whatever they are they sure are pretty.

I did a little bit of searching and found an article that has a great deal of information on the life cycle and progagation that you might find interesting. Just click on the download full article in PDF option on the below link.
