I've spent the last while getting caught up in this and the prior thread. Wow! Everyone has posted some very beautiful blossoms! Unfortunately, mine are finished blooming and expired. Luckily, I had pretty good seed production from many, so should have trading material when the time comes!

OhioBreezy, that Henka Royal is stunning and seems to bloom consistently this year! Does it come back true each year?

This is the only flower I have this morning....the cup shaped "Dai" with purple flecks.

Wow they all look fabulous, shimmering in the sunlight! Laurrie, the Akatsuki no Beni looks a lot like Kohkan I am growing except ANB has a wider picotee band. Very very nice.

Thanks to Janett and Ron for helping me ID the MG that grows next door to me as Ipomoea pandurata. I should be able to get some seeds this fall if anyone wants them. Here is a photo of a bloom from this AM.

Can someone help me with the name of this one? I think the seeds were sent to me last fall from a DG member. It sure is a nice one. Blooms are only about 2.5".

A new one today that also needs an ID. Blooms are about 5".

Editted to say, I think they may be 'Akatsuki no Murasaki'.

atenkley - Henka Royal are seeds from Emma, this is my first year growing them out, but she may come along eventually and share her experiences with it

I did. I crossed the pollen with another flower from the same seed batch as these. I found another one that has a more picot edge than the others this morning. I used that for some crosses as well.

I`m growing out some crosses right now and in a few months I will share some pictures if I get anything interesting.

Here is a purple flower with a purple star. I thought it was interesting too because I do not think it is Hannahabuki. Isn`t Hannahubuki pink?

Maybe this got crossed with something because I bought it from an open pollinated source. I`ll keep an eye on it to see how it develops and grow it again and I already used it in a cross to see how it goes.

lincolnitess, those spoked flowers look like yougiros(not a positive ID). These are becoming favorites of mine because they are so dependable. They never let you down!

This is a dark pink selection from the "Kodachi" type dwarfs of a strain similar to the Sunsmile strains. I particularly like the small hairy variegated dragonfly leaves. It grows with short internodes which makes the "stems" rather stiff and only about 3 feet long.

gardener2005 - Glad to hear that you were on top of collecting the pollen from the double and used it to pollinate another flower...

may represent a reversion to a darker color...light colors are almost always mutations derived from darker colors...I like it though...pass off a couple seeds to me if you get enough...

looks to have the leaf form most usually present on the smaller yojiro types,but the flower you posted has 6 white rays(yojiros) and the color seems to be intermediate between Mai Sugata and the lighter blue Chiaki...it looks like it may be a variant color form of 'something'...

Thanks Ron for the info. I will grow these out again next year. It appears to be setting seed and shows no signs of stopping so it looks good as far as having some seeds to share later on. I really like the quality of the plant being able to keep growing while setting seeds instead of dying off like some others I have seen.

Here's Akatsuki no Haru...it has a delicate pink color that is very difficult to capture on film.

Minibar Rose (thanks Ron and Jackie); it has incredibly variegated leaves, with small red with pictoee flowers. It puts up nice central vines that send secondary vines laterally to fill out a trellis nicely.

Joseph, I've never seen a glory with lvs variegated that much. The flower
is lovely but the lvs are amazing. Be sure and gather those seeds. LOL.

looks like the smaller version of Minibar Rose~= Beni Chidori or Tsubame...and I agree with Jackie that it strongly resembles the Kodachi dwarf that atenkley posted on the 12th...I've seen Minibar Rose develop leaves with an elongated central lobe and some partially developed double smaller upper side lobes,so I'm tending to think that the dwarf types posted here are perhaps sharing some common genetic features...

Joseph and Ron, I'll chime in here!

This past year I grew Minibar Rose, Beni Chidori, Cameo Elegance, Q0777, Sunsmile Pink, Carol strain White, Spring, and seed labeled Kodachi strain. All grew pretty much side by side. The seed sources for each were different.

There are at least two different genetic "dwarfs" going on with these. The Minibar Rose, Beni Chidori, Q077 and Cameo Elegance all had the same growth habit - the whole plant being generally much smaller than normal. They could climb, but not well. All their flowers were pink with various white margins - except the Beni Chidori that I grew had virtually no white margin. They all had the normal 'Ivy shaped" leaves but were much smaller than normal plants and the variegtion was concentrated into a clearer pattern than often seen on normal variegated leaves. The Japanese call these plants "Princess" plants and label the variegation as "Crystal". The Q0777 strain is cataloged as carrying the "hime" gene for dwarfism. Joseph, I think your plant is of this group.

The second group of "dwarfs" are the Kodachi type plants and carry the "dw" gene which basically shortens the internodeal growth, making the stems of normal diameter, but shorter and thus stiffer. Mine grew on the ground and the branches spread about 3 feet from the main stem. The leaves on the strains that I grew were all dragonfly, being elongated in the center lobe and basically of normal size. All had normal type variegation except the Carol strain which had green leaves. The flowers of plants carrying the dw gene often have a "star" shape, similar to the Kikiyou or plants sometime labeled Picotee. They are maybe a bit smaller than normal flowers, but definitely not dwarf and fine featured like the above group.

My picture of 8/12 is of this last group. The picture posted here is of Sunsmile Pink and Carol White. You can see the "star" characteristic on the Carol White bloom.

Arlen - Thanks for sharing on the plants that you grew and the observed features of the named cultivars relative to the "hime" and "dw" genes...

The main different features you observed between the plants you grew are in relation to the leaf and flower shapes and the specific pattern of the variegation...

It remains an open question to me as to what the differences between Minibar Rose, Beni Chidori,Tsubame and Cameo Elegance may or may not be...different seed sources may be variously reliable in the supply of seeds tagged with the aforementioned names...

It would seem that the plants youi grew this season from the first group,that would carry the dwarf "hime" gene,were all of a definite overall dwarf form...I make mention of plants that have the basic look of the Minbar Rose,but without small leaves and that readily climb to over 12'+ feet in the thread I linked to and presumeably these tall climbers would not be homozygous for any of the dwarf type genes...
