Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I am looking for new Dwarf bearded (SDB) or Intermediate iris (IB) for my garden. I have some great colors to trade.

Wanda,

Janet, not many people grow the median iris. I LOVE them since it can extend my iris season by a month. The dwarf iris can bloom in grow in almost full shade since they bloom so early with my daffodils. The color combinations are incredible! The Intermediates bridge the the time from the dwarfs to the Tall beardeds, blooming with both. Both dwarfs & Intermediates increase fast and have LOTS of blooms per clump. And both are suitable for front rows.

Appleblossom Pink is a lovely Intermediate I can share. HUGE blooms for 4 weeks on a short plant.

Harlow Gold is a brilliant yellow Intermediate. The yellow holds thru iowa spring freezes and rains.

They are just beautiful. I have a couple of little ones...no idea what they are called...lol. They are the blue/purple family. When I bought them it was somewhere like HD and I planted them with the Daffodils...they are really sweet. You really have great gardens and ideas! I think I sent you some of a pink one I have that is an intermediate perhaps...last year...this is a picture of it...it doesn't get very tall and usually blooms a little earlier than the rest...and maybe a red one I have is in that class..I just don't have names...got them so long ago. This is the pink, but it usually is blooming here in April..so maybe it is not one...it is a shorter one for me though...

Since we could mail them in envelopes, I only have one, but would trade. Elephant Footprints.

Marquette, MI(Zone 5a)

Wanda-you have d-mail. Did you go to the Grand in Sparta???--Marsha

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Marsha, got your dmail & replied a few minutes ago.

Yes, Marsha, I am back from the ATA Trapshooting Grand newly moved to Sparta , IL after spending 150 years in Vandalia, Ohio. Poor town has 3500 people and didn't know what hit them. Over 700 parked RVs out at the Shooting Complex. Another 3000 + of us were scattered in little motels all over the area. We like to eat & buy supplies. I saw droves of shooters in Walmart each day as we picked up ice. Shooters came and went for various events, but we set up our canopy and stayed for 8 days. Hot & tired.

Our numbers were as high as 5000 shooters + assorted family members in Vandalia. This is NOT a cheap sport. I understand that taking our trapfields to put another runway on the Dayton airport cost the area $10 million a year.
Sparta and the towns around are in for some BIG changes as the ATA Shooting Complex hosts multi events over the next years.

My hubby is a AA27AA shooter. That means we rush to set up our area at 7 am and wait 3-4 hours before he shoots. The second event is usually 3-4 hours after that.... If he shoots well, we have to wait to see if he qualifies for the shoot offs.

I read 3 books,napped & crocheted 1 1/2 baby afghans on this trip....

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

polly, Elephant Footprint is adorable. I'd love to trade! I prefer 2 rhizomes since they are so small & get lost easy in my garden.

I'll be happy to send you 2 of what ever you would like too. Do you see any I've posted that you would like? dmail me & we'll get this put together.
As you said, these are tiny and will fit well into simple envelopes.

Janet, your pink one is Raspberry Blush--Intermediate. Very recognizable and I love my clump. I shared too much of it last year and have to let it rest.

Chanted is a sweet SDB dwarf.

I am glad it did well for you. I am excited as I have purchased Brown Lasso this year, can't wait to see it grow as well. Is there any way to move some around and not loose their bloom next year? A lot of mine don't bloom the first year if they are moved, I didn't know if there was a secret to get the bloom to come the first year after moving. I would like to move some of my pink to the new bed. Also, do you put yours any closer than a foot apart or is that about the right distance? This is my first time making a bed mostly for iris and while I don't want to crowd them, I want them to fill out well too. If you have an you want to trade for postage or other plants (other than iris) please keep me in mind. Sounds like you had a fun trip albeit hot! Did your husband do well in the competition?

Janet, moving them NOW with as much dirt intact as possible is best. I grab whole clumps of dwarfs, break off roots on the edges & move the clump to a new spot. Dwarfs are pretty tough.

Blooms set in the fall. I put my dwarf iris CLUMPS at least a foot apart, but the roots are arranged in a circle just 4 -5 inches apart.

Granny Marsh & Janet--dmail to you on our trades.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Polly, your dwarf iris arrived and they are sweet. Yes, they ARE suppoded to be small, That's why we call them "dwarfs". Come to think of it, I have seen some historic Tall Beardeds that bloomed this size!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Wanda,
If you dmailed me about a trade, I didn't receive the dmail. I am still very interested if you are!
JanetS

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Got my hands full at the minute. Let's see if I have any room once all the others arrive and are in the ground.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

That's fine, if you have any for postage that would work for me as well...just let me know when you have the time.
Janet

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Wanda, whew, I thought they seemed extra small.

And yours were, of course, absolutely great.

Thanks so much!

Polly

Wanda,

I have to tell you, my whole family, myself included is still laughing at your comment above.

"Polly, your dwarf iris arrived and they are sweet. Yes, they ARE supposed to be small, That's why we call them "dwarfs".

The only thing missing is the "duh", which of course you were wayyyyy to polite to put in. LOL

Polly

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

LOL, Polly!

Only a few of my iris roots get as big as the West Coast roots, but all bloom well and are probably tougher since I do not baby them thru our Iowa droughts and blizzards. Many of my mighty historics have roots almost as tiny as the dwarfs and put out tall stalks. Some of my Intermediates have big roots.

You should see the roots of the MDB ( Minature Dwarf Bearded) iris. TINY! Grow to under 6 inches tall & get lost easy If I don't plant them in the right place. Note to self: need rock garden somewhere for the little ones.

Wow, Wanda,
What a beautiful garden!! You are just amazing! I am still planting my new bed. Work is never done, it takes so long in the heat! I work a little in the am and then a little in the late pm so maybe I can finish before frost! LOL
JanetS

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5b)

Janet: At least your frost is much later than ours in Iowa. I'm still planting too. Hope to wrap all that up by this weekend - that will give me about six weeks, maybe more, before the first hard frost. Linda

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Yes, I'm giving myself this weekend as a deadline for planting /moving iris too.

Got a great box of dwarfs from Grannymarsh yesterday. Whoopee!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Goodness - we are hitting 106 every day and you are already talking about first frost! I know I am going to be glad I live here when January rolls around, but right now I would love to be looking forward to a frost sometime before ....what am I thinking ,,,we rarely get a frost- LOL!!!

I plant my iris and daylilies up until late October and it gives them plenty of time to settle in before cold hits ----

Believe me I am not bragging about our weather, the biggest downside is that my flowers only bloom for about a month before the heat hits, I don't get to enjoy them all summer, and when it gets real hot I go out and shade them with beach umbrella's!

The grass is always greener......

I have certainly enjoyed seeing everyone's beautiful iris this summer - thank you!

Wouldn't it be nice to have a house in each area and follow spring/summer???
