Only a few of my iris roots get as big as the West Coast roots, but all bloom well and are probably tougher since I do not baby them thru our Iowa droughts and blizzards. Many of my mighty historics have roots almost as tiny as the dwarfs and put out tall stalks. Some of my Intermediates have big roots.

You should see the roots of the MDB ( Minature Dwarf Bearded) iris. TINY! Grow to under 6 inches tall & get lost easy If I don't plant them in the right place. Note to self: need rock garden somewhere for the little ones.
