plum tree sap

Louisville, TN(Zone 7a)

ok, i have a plum tree that gives plums later that plum tree no. 2. tree 1 has this sap stuff coming out of it on the trunk. is this normal or do i need to do something to it? i planted them 3-4 years ago, got them at lowes, not knowing what i was doing. i did know to get 2 different types. so far, i have been a bad adopted parent. the hap beetles and birds get most of the plums. they are nice looking but the birds and bugs get more than us. what do i need to do year round for maintenance with the hopes we may end up with a big bowl brought inside next year and not just grabbing one that is not eaten on when we are in the yard?

1.You have borers. Depending on how much damage they have already done , you may or may not be able to save the tree. Plums are pretty high maintenance in the east. If you are not willing to use a home orchard spray on recommended schedule, you would probably be wise to eliminate them. http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/entomology/factsheets/peachtree.html http://www.garden-services.com/peachbor.html

2. There are quite a few insects and fungi that attack fruit. http://www.caf.wvu.edu/kearneysville/wvufarm8b.html http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/selectnewpest.plum.html

man. with all that info, i amkes me want to get the chain saw out now. the fruit is fine, i just get there late. i am going to take a photo of what i am talking about and find out about a year round maintenance. i guy that put in some trees for me last winter asked me if i wanted him to just take it out and i thought he was crazy! now i am understanding better. i was just so fulfilling for the kids, and me, to have the plums with so little work, now its looking different!

I know what you are talking about. There is a thread on here somewhere that I started that shows the same thing on mine. It looks like brown jelly oozing out. I cut mine down and burned it, it was too far gone.
