When do you harvest the sunflower seeds and how do you get the seeds out of the flower?
I'm new to this so I don't know where to go, can someone direct me?
I'd like to get a recipe for salting and roasting the sunflower seeds.
Harvesting sunflower seeds
Last year, as the blooms begin to fade wilt? I just cut off the flower, and put it in a paper bag and forgot about it. In December, came across the bag, and the seeds were completely dried, and just sort of "shelled" them out. Stored them in an envelope and planted them this spring.
Yea, sunflowers have to be about the easiest seeds to harvest. The biggest challenge for me was keeping the squirrels away. I have heard that birds can be a challenge, but the first year the squirrels hauled away all the flowers before the birds had a chance. I did it like defoecat...I cut off some fading flowers and put them in a paper bag to dry.

I didn't do it early enough last year, as the birds had a feast, and got most of some of the seeds. So this year, I am keeping a close eye on them.
Couldn't one cover the flowers in netting or something as the time approaches?

As long as the netting is fine, that should work.
