I have 2 beautiful 6ft tall avocadoes in containers that are from pits-- I hear about needing a male & female to have fruit- If that is true how is the sex discovered? Or will I ever get fruit from homegrown trees?
Avocado-sexes?
Avocados don't have different sexes. There is a possibility that some of them may not be self-fertile, which means you need a second tree around to get fruit (I'm not really an avocado expert so I don't know if that's the case with them or not). There are at least some of them are self-fertile though because I had a tree in the backyard at my old house and it bore some fruit even though there were no other avocados anywhere nearby. But even trees that are self-fertile will often bear more fruit if they're cross-pollinated by another tree--mine never gave me many avocados and I think that may be why.
ditto what ecrane said- my grandfather's gave many avacados for many, many years w/ the next closest being about 1/4 of an acre away.
