Suggestions for Difficult Planting Area

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

I am beginning to turn my backyard into a perennial garden. I have found that one side of my yard is FULL of tree roots anywhere from an .25" to 2"-3" in diameter. I have no trees in my backyard, however, my neighbor does have a couple of sugar maples in his. I am needing suggetions on how to rip through other than with a shovel ( I am not as young as I used to be!) or suggestions on how to contain a raised bed. Thanks!
