Sticky goo on plum tree.

I found this sticky goo on the trunk of my "Bruce" plum tree. I know it is usually caused by some type of injury or borers, but my question is what to do now? The tree otherwise looks healthy.

I would clean the goo off. If there is a hole there, I would poke a wire in there to kill a possible borer. Also I would squirt some lime suphur in the hole too.

http://www.cfgrower.com/assocnews/0704/insecticides.html. I prefer to control them with emergence sprays just as they are breaking dornamancy. I have had good luck doing this, but I have never let mine get infested to the point that yours seems to be, I f it it is as bad as it looks you need to do something now. If you are in an area that has orchards, (stone fruit). Your agricultural extension agent should be able to make recommendations.

I don't think it has been this way long. I usually notice things pretty quickly. There has been no damage to the tree because it is protected by a tree ring. I will see if I can clean it up some tomorrow. I have some bug-b-gone for plants, should I spray the trunk with that after I clean it?

I would clean the holes out good...providing there are holes..and poke in there and then squirt something in the holes. This actually worked for me in the spring of 2002.
