LadyCleo, I agree with blue, I think the only thing that will deter that many deer is a fence--electric and/or seven feet tall. The only problem with a .357 is that, depending on where you live, it may be illegal to discharge a firearm within city limits. In my neck of the woods, the deer are a much bigger problem in town than in the country...the deer know that if they set one hoof outside city limits, they will immediately become venison.

I Got Him!
PHUG,
Well, there are OTHER WAYS of doing the job of a .357 that DONT require a "discharge", heheheh.
Electric should NOT have to be 7 feet. Once they get a shocking surprise from the fence, they usually dont come back for seconds, hehehe.

Yes, I've had students offer to bow hunt (is that the right verb?) the deer on my property to get around the "discharge" prohibition...however, I have several elderly neighbors and I have this nightmare vision of one of them getting impaled by an errant arrow...eeeeee...
And yes the above should probably read "electric OR seven feet tall" instead. :)
I was sitting out on my front porch for about an hour yesterday and saw two rabbits in the driveway...one of them lying down, apparently taking a siesta...the woodchuck ambling across the front lawn, munching on goodness knows what...squirrels...chipmunks...and a couple of deer at the edge of the woodlot, sticking out their tongues at me. *sigh* It's the !!!! Wild Kingdom around here.

PHUG,
Well, you can always trap them, and humanely dispose of them. A running engine, a piece of garden hose, and a pillowcase works wonders.

That's humane?
bluelytes-
your starting to concern me. A little too much thought killing!
I confess I am soft and squishy and hate killing anything, so I deter what I can through fences and organic chemical repellants and accept the occasional munched plant as collateral damage. If it's THAT important to me--like my veggies--I put it behind a seven foot tall fence. Actually right now I'd most like to kill the teenagers who rip the pears off my trees. The previous owner planted five pear trees right on the street and apparently the fruit is an irresistable temptation to boys. I wouldn't mind if they ate them, but they prefer to hurl them at each other.
pam
KNOL,
Yes, they just go to sleep, as humane as we treat death row prisoners.
WORM,
Not trying to kill thoughts, just pests. hehehe

PHUG,
Well, for me, it would be a choice. A several thousand dollar 7' foot fence or a 2.00 bullet/arrow/lance/knife/poison.

Yikes!!! What would you use to build a fence, gold bars??? :) But I'm thinking a direct blow with a blunt object might be a good method to use on the teenagers. LOL
To each his own, I say. :)
pam
PHUG,
I dont know what costs are where you are, but, we put up a 4' chain link fence, and it was 1500, and it was NOT a LONG run of fence. Based on that, I figured a 7' on had to be BIG $$$$$.

Teenagers - a water gun loaded with some of that coyote urine ya'll were talking about. Oh, don't do it...they might come back for revenge. Maybe just a call to your local police office.
Yikes again...I used welded wire and 4x4s for a 12' x 20' veggie garden...it wasn't cheap but not over $1000 (I think a few hundred if I remember correctly). The electric fence also sounds like a good (and possibly cheaper?) option, since I'm contemplating expanding my garden. (On the other hand, I have a toddler, so on second thought maybe not!)
Yeah, I just told the teenagers to wait and pick the pears when they were ripe, and I usually wave hello at them when I see them, and am hoping that by not being the nasty lady on the street I can minimize the destruction. They just take a couple here and there when they ride by on their bikes, which is annoying but at least they don't come on my property or throw pears at me or my house. I'd LIKE to super soak them with predator pee, though. :)
pam
I think making nice is probably your best bet.
