plant sales in Metro Boston

Arlington, MA

Hi All,
we just moved, and we now have a yard! Being short on cash and long on ideas, I was wondering if you know of any good plant sales this spring or other ways (online?) to get inexpensive perennials, shrubs and trees. I've heard that Arnold Arboretum has a great plant sale. Other ideas?
thanks

Arboretum plant sale is in Sept. and is for members and membership is easy enough. Membership includes a voucher for a free plant. Out at Mass. Horticultural society HQ in Wellesley on May 21 is the Society Row plant sale. Representatives from various plant societies are there and they sell their specialty plants. Lyman estates will be having a sale shortly of Hostas. I got a card but I am not near it at the moment. I will get it tomorrow and post the date. the Lyman estate is in Waltham. The Historical Society and the Garden club here in Saugus will be having a Strawberry festival sometime in early June. I don't have a date on that yet but there is a plant sale at this event. Plus, the strawberry shortcake is excellent. These are a few that I can come up with at the moment. It's late though and I will check some more things tomorrow.

There is a great resource in West Boylston called the Tower Hill Botanic Garden. They have an annual plant sale which is on June 3 this year. (Free Admission, $1 Parking fee) Their website is http://www.towerhillbg.org. Just walking around there will give you inspiration and their plants are fantastic. You'll see varieties that don't show up just everywhere.

Look for plant sales offered by Garden Clubs. Most towns have a garden club and they almost all offer sales in May. The plants are usually inexpensive and should do well for you in this climate (as they are locally grown). Check this link for some listings:

People, Places and Plants Magazine also lists sales. You can find this magazine at many local libraries.

Here's another link that lists many sales (and garden events):

I thought of another sale you may try. It is called Sister Plant sale held each year for one week only in Reading, Mass. See this link for more info:

I have not been to this but gardening friends have raved over this plant sale.
