This is Jive Talking. It's the first year I've grown Louisianas. I've been inspired by this group to try them and photos really don't do them justice.
Thank to you all for feeding my addiction. This is one that I'm really enjoying.
Louisiana's are beginning.
Oooh, nice! I haven't tried LAs either...but I've been contemplating growing some in a kiddie pool in my back yard!
Laura
Laura, I'm relying on the understanding that they will grow in common garden soil. I actually did dig down three inches in my clay soil and used a planting mix for camellias and acid loving plants, then mulched them. They are on a sprinkler system though. They've seemed plenty happy. I just couldn't face the look of a kiddie pool!
I agree with you there! That's why I haven't broken down and purchased any yet.
They'll grow just fine in ammended garden soil. I just don't have any more room in my flowerbeds! LOL!
Laura
I couldn't face digging a hole deep enough to disguise the kiddie pool either. I'm always out of room and trying to squeeze in just one more plant.
Oh doss they are wonderful! I have some that are showing buds now. They haven't spread much yet as they were planted last fall. My neighbor just plants them in her regular (clay) soil and they do fine at her house. I dug out a kidney shaped area and filled back in with the clay mixed with lots of peat and some commercial potting soil. They have the most incredible blooms as yours show! I think of them as "Dr. Seuss flowers".
How wonderful...this will be my first year for the LA and I have a few bloom stalks...
Dr. Seuss Flowers they are. So unusual. This is the first year that they are in my garden too. I'll be interested in seeing how your planting method works. Be sure to let me know.
Looking forward to all of those photos. I have a few more myself and it's so much fun.
So pretty, mine have buds on them and looks like it won't be long before they bloom, they did not bloom last year so I can not wait..
I can't wait for you either! We'll look forward to all of those great photos.
I will have to look at the tags on mine, I can's even remember all I have and they all were so generously sent to me by Tazzy and I can't wait to see these finally bloom and it doesn't look like it will be too long now the buds look like they are about to pop any day.
I do love that one especially, it's a beauty...I wondered about how the LA's spread, they sure don't multiply like the regular Iris's do or at least mine have not.
Maybe Tazzy or some other Louisiana expert will show up. I thought that they were supposed to grow faster than the beardeds. It could be that you are at the lowest zone for them?
I must be, out of the ones she sent me in 04 only one bloomed last year which I did not get a picture and this year I see more bloomers on the rest but they have not spread like the other Iris's but at least they are getting ready now.
I hope that they bloom for you soon. Mine are really just starting but I have a lot of buds too. You will love them. Better than you can imagine.
If mine bloom as good as your did I know I will and this time I will have my camera ready..
Hi Ya'll
The louisiana irises are beautiful. Bought 4 new ones myself this year (don't remember all their names). Last year I bought Kissie, Blackgame Cock and Dixie Deb. Intend to make a sort of bog garden as they like lots of water. I live in south Louisiana and used to see natives growing along the roadside don't see that anymore too may new subdivisions. Have to go into the swamp now to find some. I have a light blue iris that has been passed down for generations (got my first one 30 years ago) I was always told it was LA is there anyway to confirm this?
Where is Tazzy? I haven't seen her post for awhile now.
Oh, Taaaaaaazzzzzzeeeeee.......you still out there???
I was wondering the same thing..Mine she sent me have just bloomed.
I hope Tazzy posts hers soon too! I am so addicted to these - I am going to order more from Iris City. I am definately getting that Garnet Storm Dancer Doss. GORGEOUS picture.
Gosh those are gorgeous! I can't wait until we move to more property! :0)
I think I have one LA coming up in my front beds. I don't even remember planting it...yet somehow it's there. I'll post a picture of it when it blooms in a week or so.
Can't wait! I'm very attached to them. I really didn't realize how beautiful they were in person. Prix d'Elegance is about 6" across. It's stunning.
Now that's quite a face! I'm so glad that you posted it. Guess if you can pay for college, he could repay you with some sweat equity.
I don't know Eastman Winds so it will be quite a treat to see your photo of it.
You must be very proud...It is so hard to see mine so far away, but my son send me two beautiful bouquets of spring bloomers yesterday and at least he is not in Iraq anymore so I will be having a great mothers day just knowing that..
Mine finally bloomed and I have a few more that are about ready to but the tags that Tazzy sent with bulbs have disappeared somehow and I can't tell for sure what which ones they are ..this one looks some what like your Cajun Sunrise but I can not tell to be sure...
Hope everyone has a wonderful mothers day..
It does look like Cajun Sunrise. Wish that Tazzy would show up. She'd know.
I know, I wonder where she is, I haven't seen her on in ages..
Thanks
Do we need to get a posse out looking for her?? LOL I really do hope she is ok.
I saw Twyla (Hope43) posting in the Daves Garden forum today, I think I'll dmail her and see what's going on.
Yes, I would say that is definately CAJUN SUNRISE! How pretty! I hope EASTMAN WINDS opens today. I always chuckle when I see that name because my DH works from Eastman Chemicals here in Kingsport. And sometimes there is a certain "aroma" from the products they are working with (usually butyric acid which smells like rancid butter) that wafts out from the plant... an "Eastman wind" perhaps? But coming from Australia I'm sure the name has a much different significance.
I'm getting worried about Tazzy too! :-(
I dmailed Twyla, but haven't heard back from her yet.
Thanks Mendy. Let's just hope she's out at an iris show or something.
I hope so!
