Advice about Elberta Peach tree

Danbury, CT(Zone 6a)

Hello,

I had an impulse buy last night. I bought an Elberta Peach tree. Right now, we've been in a warm snap where I live and the ground is nice and soft. However, it could still get cold again. My first instict is to just plant the tree right away. My husband is worried that if it gets cold again, which it probably will, it could hurt the tree.

If I don't plant it right away, what do I do with it until I can plant it? No doubt, it would have lived outside at the store where I bought it.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

If the tree is dormant and the ground is not frozen, I would plant it.

Well, the tree does have little closed up buds on it. All of the trees did. That makes me think it's not exactly dormant. The ground is not frozen. It's nice and mushy. I've been doing some digging in my backyard to get my new raised beds ready.

Do you think it would be okay if I planted it and then put a nice thick layer of mulch. And/Or a thick layer of leaves to insulate it?

As long as it has not started leafing out, cold should not hurt it.

Welcome Jenhillphoto, I agree. I would plant it. Take advantage of the spring rains.

you don't have fruit to protect, --I see no down side to planting it---

Great! I'm glad you all agree. I planted it yesterday. :)

Thanks so much for responding. I feel better now.
