the selection and culture of the right plants for the right place.

"The Spirit of the Southern Garden"
Keynote speaker CAROL REESE opens the symposium by exploring various styles that define a sense of place for the Southern gardener. Carol hails from Jackson, Tennessee, where she works for the University of Tennessee Extension Service as an Ornamental Horticulture Specialist. She is a garden columnist, a speaker, and the co-host of a locally broadcast South Carolina television gardening show. Her talks are always informative and entertaining.

A graduate of the University of Georgia, Amanda previously worked as an intern at the Chicago Botanical Garden. She will instruct us on establishing and maintaining a healthy, happy garden.

"Southern By Design" JENKS FARMER is the designer and curator of several private gardens in South Carolina that include Moore Farms and a private Victorian era garden and cycad collection in Charleston; he also serves as consultant curator of Arcadia. Due to having to feed my children, I arrived at 9:18 and it had started at 9;15... so I went to the back and grabbed a seat at a table and sat next to a great guy I started talking to and low and behold it was a speakers table and it was Jenks Farmer! It was great!

I got a great education on what he does, growing crinums and all about the private estate he works at full time in South Carolina. This estate was part of Jenks persentation and it is amazing. To see the estate yourself, go to http://www.mooreplants.com/. Be sure to watch the slide show as well.

************************* There are two PRIVATE invite only garden tours and in order to be invited, you must sign up for email at the site.************************************************

I will be doing everthing in my power to attend this year. I believe the spring tour will be in late May.

To see the crinums that Jenks sells himself, so to http://www.jenksfarmer.com/ and it is Lush Life Nurseries. Please note the the size of the crinums brought to the symposium were not what he is able to sell online. The largest one I bought at auction is about ten years worth of growth. However, I do want to say that he explained that while crinums can be found in ditches and on ebay really cheap, he has spent years growing and raising the ones that have the sturdy stems stalks and those that do not fall over in the mud. He has a masters in hort and is just so knowledgeable and educated about these plants that I would rest assuresd that you were buying from the best.

Me and Jenks Farmer.

You lucky lady, please try to come Saturday and tell us more.
Now that you absorbed all that knowledge you can be our expert here, right? Imagine meeting Dr. A!!!

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

Oh, you met Jack! Isn't he a love? Not only is he a hosta expert, he also grows tons of other stuff. I think he has more epimediums than anyone else in Atlanta. I'm a member of the Hosta Society and I'm always asking him stuff. You really need to think about joining that group.

Carmen, I've been to his garden and Jane Law's who is right down the street. We are both in the Marietta Gardeners Club and we has spoken there as well. And I saw him on a Gardener's Diary. I have just joined the GA Dahlia Society, and now the GPPA. I love the Hydrangea Society.. they don't meet monthly though and I told my husband that this year come what may, I am going to go on that tour! I'm also still in the Marietta Gardeners club!!!! I have a limited amount of shade and mine is certainly not a woodland shade garden. However, I did make a trip to Winterberry farms two years ago and I brought back 60 baby hosta for the shade that I do have in my garden and I am set for the time being.
