Hummingbird Plants for my Window Boxes and Containers?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi, everybody--

I'm in the middle of ordering seeds and plants (Bluestone has a 20% off sale until Midnight Feb. 1st.) for my containers and window boxes and want to make them especially fun for the Hummingbirds and Butterflies. (and for us!)

I am looking for some new and fresh ideas and found these two pics for guidance--but do you have any other ideas for me?

and one pictured in the White Flower Farm catalog http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/87119-product.html

I am looking for some really striking combinations of hummingbird plants, especially.

If I get something really creative together I'd like to enter a container or window box in the Flower Show in April.

Thanks. t.

Wow! I'm watching this thread to see what suggestions you get.

Tammy-- I'd like to see some pics too--I went ahead and ordered some HB seeds and now I don't know quite what to do with them! Should be fun to play around with, though...

Maybe window boxes and such are out of fashion this year...I love 'em though. In fashion, or out!

I'm looking for window box ideas, too. I am planning to have five of them. Three are going to get the hot afternoon sun, which could be a problem here. Have you found any more ideas?

No, but I bought 7 boxes on 'close-out' at Lowes, so I'm going to have to come up with something!

Here's the other thread that is discussing window boxes. But we need more input...

Here is a wonderful site listing hummingbird plants A-Z! Check it out.

Kay, that site is certainly all inclusive on Hummingbird Plants, isn't it? Now there is no excuse for not finding 'something' for the little birds to snack on! LOL

I still haven't made up a great combination for my window boxes, but I'm working on it. Will use a combination of vines, trailers and tallish plants--all, I suppose, in the red color scheme with some yellow. (I want something a little more 'dazzling' than the WFF container combination pictured on the link above.)

Now, to grow the seed... that is a challenge for me, but I have been checking out the Wintersowing Forum and trying that this year, hoping for success.

Wish we could see more pics of DGers HB window boxes and container plantings?! :-)

I am growing Fuchsia triphylla 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' this year because I hear it is very attractive to hummingbirds. I am new to this plant -- I've posted over in the Tropicals forum with questions if anyone has any advice (http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/576082/)

Singing Springs Nursery has this one.

sedum-- I will be interested to hear what they say about Gartenmeister Bonstedt--

I had read on another thread that it was great for the HBs, too, and I was thinking of trying if from seed... (just for fun).
