This warm weather has the catkins on my filberts growing. In the last week they have gone from about an inch/2.5cm to well over 2in/5cm. That means the females will be coming out in early Feb? Yikes! Here in S. Penn (where a chemical plant 8 miles away is exploding and burning as I write this) this would be about as early as they have ever bloomed. After bloom, temps below 12F/-11C will kill the incipient nut. I hope for the rest of the winter to be mild. Anybody else seeing any activity on their trees?
