What newer varities of coneflowers bear "true" seeds.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I was wondering if anyone has been able to start newer echinacea from seeds and get true offspring. Some are clones - some I don't know about. Big Sky, Meadowbrite, Terra Nova plants are examples.

So far I've only found these to come true from seeds:

White Coneflower 'White Swan' http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/48966/index.html
Eastern Purple Coneflower http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/26/index.html
Clasping Leaf Coneflower http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/219/index.html
Smooth Coneflower http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54830/index.html
Mexican Hats http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/801/index.html
Cutleaf Coneflower 'Herbstsonne' http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/647/index.html

However; I'm going to be trying to test these 'Magnus' & Dwarf Purple Coneflower 'Kim's Knee High' seeds from 2 different traders.

Robin,
I know I have gave away a LOT of Magnus volunteers and didn't notice anything unusual about them. I saved seeds from Sunrise, both Mango's,Rocky Top, Takao,Pale Purple, Indiacia and Jade if you wanted to try any of those. All of my plants I have entered into plant files if you wanted to look at them. I am going to try some of them next year to see.

Here's Jade

I did a DG search on the word - Coneflower - this is the link: http://davesgarden.com/pf/search.php?search_text=Coneflower&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

I would sure like to try some of those seeds! I'm doing winter sowing this again year; but using this method: Winter Sowing Seeds Idea: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/558476/

Wow! That Jade is an eye-catcher. Where did you put the others?

Robin,

I'm a little unsure of your question of where did I put the others? You can look up my plants in my homepage under contributions " plants images/comments"
My Jade doesn't look as good as I think it should - I'm moving it next year. My guess is that most of my seeds should come out good, except the Meadowbrites - they look very engineered, but it would be still interesting if you have the space.
Send me a dmail with what you want and I'll give you my address for a SASE,
Al

Um... Al..... did you just hear that? I thought I heard someone just say, "Boot to the head... nyga... nyga!"

So I looked there; nice Dahlias too! Your junior apprentice looks like she wants all the sunflower seeds you could grow.

This is mine: Dahlia 'Sweetheart' http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/108426/index.html

sheesh! How could I forget about that link?

I'll Dmail you.

Robin,
Coneflower's are one of my plants that I collect.
The varieties that I have seeds collected from are: Big Sky Sunrise echinacea, Mango Meadowbrite echinacea, Ruby Giant echinacea, Takao rudbeckia, Pale Purple coneflower(Bush's I believe) , Prairie(echinacea pallida), Rocky Top echinacea.
I have ordered from Plant delight's and have a Walter's Gardens catalog(nice book).
I have many other varieties that I will have seeds from next year.
Here's the plantspotter's site www.plantspotters.com - are they distributed by you? I like your collar dahlia.

Magnus definitely comes true from seed for me. So does White Swan.
I, too, am "lusting" for sunrise and sunset. The plants are sooooo expensive!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

D,
Got Sunrise, do not have Sunset. I have Evan Saul which is the newer variety of that though. Put Ruby Giant and Fragrant Angel on your list you'll love them,

I want my own coneflower forum in case you can't tell

I'm going to winter sow some echinacea tenneesseensis I got in a trade today--here they like cold stratification. What color is fragrant angel? white? I'm also trying a winter sowing of "hula skirt" I had the seeds. I think coneflowers deserve their own forum.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Dm,
Fragrant Angel is a white version of Ruby Giant. I have Rocky Top which is a tennesseeins(sp).
I am not familiar with Hula Skirt.
I think my 20degree garage should work on them.

I haven't checked all the good seed catalogues out yet, and I'm sure I'm not aware of them all, but this is what I've found.

Jelitto is offering angustifolia, pallida, paradoxa (waiting to see if these survive and bloom), purpurea and purpurea Alba, Doubledecker (Indiaca), Magnus, Rubinstein(Ruby Star), Verbesserte Leuchtstern (Bright Star Improved, Starlight) and Rocky Top Hybrids.

Chilterns offers most of the common species, and these: ‘Lustre Hybrids’ Mixed Colours, ‘Primadonna Deep Rose’, ‘White Swan’, 'Brilliant Star', 'Magnus', ‘Rocky Top Hybrids’.

Parks Seeds - White Swan, Bravado, Magnus, paradoxa.

There are probably a few more out there somewhere being offered by reputable seed companies. My logic tells me, that if they are offered as seed by a reputable company, you can expect the same results when you grow them. Everything else is iffy, but could be fun to try. Whatever you get from these latest fashion hybrids will be "seedlings of".

Here is a new one that I stumbled across. http://www.prideofplaceplants.com/plant-introductions/echinacea_green_envy.html Not that I will be buying this one.

Yes Al--I think that 20 degree garage is gonna do just fine! I can't remember it ever getting that cold here, although it did snow (the one time it does snow I'm across town in a hospital on the east side of town where it doesn't snow--just my luck! LOL). I'm hoping it gets cold enough here for winter stratification--although it hasn't been warmer that 55 in a week. Weird weather year for us.

Love the pic! The doubledeckers look nice--do they come true from seed? The yellow looks alot like hula skirt (look at Parks catalog) downflowing (I'm sure that's not the correct term!) petals. I'm really wanting some orange conflowers too!
Debbie

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Echoes,
Thanks for the info I would probably agree. The new green one looks good. I have Jade which is light green. Good luck on your coneflower abstinence LOL.
Debbie,
Didn't find Hula Skirt yet: Mexican,Pallida and Paradoxa should have the drooping petals.
The only orange ones I have that have flowered so far are the 2 Meadowbrite ones - highly doubt those seeds to be true.
BTW - I never heard back from NW about any seeds so if you wanted any send me a dmail. I am not a big seed trader, but I hate to waste anything living.

Twilight is another new one that is a must have!! I was able to get one at my local nursery. It has the prettiest color flowers, a dark rose red color. I didn't get any pictures of mine in the fall, and I am just praying that it survives the winter. My orange meadowbrite didn't make it last year.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

No pictures - that's an outrage!
I bought some later in the year that won't flower until next year.
I won't say that I need to have them all - yet.

Here's a great coneflower reference site.

Hula skirts is paradoxa (got them from the Parks catalog). Hopefully they will look good mixed in with the tenneesseensis since they have recurved petals.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I find 'Ruby Star' and 'Magnus' all over and they are identical to parents. 'Green Wizard' hasn't bloomed yet, hopefully next summer. I want more.... :)

Portugal Cove-St. Ph, NL(Zone 5a)

Rudbeckia herbstsonne - tall, late blooming perennial. I am hoping that someone in this forum has seed to trade.

I got my Songsparrow catalog today and they have a new coneflower. Sort of thought the Meadowbrite people would have a new one out soon.
