Winter Sowing Seeds Idea

I have gotten the bug to do this since DG member 'bluespiral' posted a link for it in the seed trading forum. It seems to be very easy to do and will be a whole lot easier when I know where I've planted 'those' seeds. I could see the lightbulb flashing and the little 'idea' bubbles forming. It will be better too, to do it after things are frozen and most little critters who like the seeds are asleep in hibernation so they don't 'collect' my seeds.

And yes; I will try winter sowing some tomato seeds; as I've seen volunteer tomato plants in downtown Binghamton near the supermarket, by the fenced in part of their unattended grassy area were the trees grow. The supermarket sets up their plant sales in front of the fence and also overloads of 'fresh' veggies in the warm weather.

So I'm posting the link here in case anyone wants to try it or talk about it.

Amazing, In my monthly gardening group none of them have heard of the Winter Sow method, and a few of them are (or claim to be) master gardeners ---- so I will be tracking my own winter sowing progress for the group this winter / spring ...... I'll bet I can get some of them to try it next year!

Shirley says she's going to start winter-sowing on the Solstice, which sounds celebratory to me.

So, methinks now would be a good time, if you haven't already, to join a plant society with a seed exchange. I will return to this post from time to time with links for them as I find them.

I can only afford to join one. Haven't decided which one, yet.

The one I would most like to join for its seed exchange is the British "The Royal Horticultural Society", whose membership also includes the publication called The Garden. Since the new restrictions on importing seed and plants into the US, do not know at this time whether this would still be a good idea. Any comments/ideas?
