bird id

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

we have these birds that are feeding from the feeder. they usually travel in groups, 2-8. they are small. i think the males are different from the females..one color is like a molted brown, and the other is molted brown on top, with red the head and breast area. we think its some kind of finch, but cant seem to get an id. any help would be appreciated. i live in southern mississippi.

I had questions about birds and Kathleen supplied us with a wonderful site - here is the link

Purple finch, maybe? http://www.birdnature.com/feb1898/purplefinch.html

Or a house finch? http://www.birdsforever.com/finch.html

We have seen both at our feeders in Ohio, but most often it's the house finches we see.

I have house finches at my window feeder all day, every day. They were my first thought when I read your question. I guess that I am a little late.
