I read somehere that there are Elephant Ears that like sun. I'd like to find some, due to the lack of shade in my yard.
Does anyone have a name?
Thanks. Steve.
Sun-Loving EE?
Steve,
I just went looking in the plant files as I was thinking the Alocasia Odora would be one. This one can take full sun, but you still need to make sure it doesn't dry out.
A few blocks from here there is a bank on the corner. Concrete and tarmac all around the flower beds. The beds are full of the Odora. They look like Odora.
I have my Mickey Mouse Taro, and Alocasia Macrr in full sun, periodically with a little filtered sun at times during the day, and in pots. So far they have done well.
When you have time, go here and browse in the EE's to see what you can do in full sun. http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=elephant+ears&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&Search=Search&searcher[common]=Elephant%20Ear

Thanks, Molly.
The Odora is a neat looking plant, as is the Mickey Mouse Taro. All of the pictures of the MM showed it being pretty small - how big does it get?
Couldn't find anyhting on Alocasia Macrr - is that a typo?
Steve
Steve,
The Mickey Mouse I have right now is about 4 feet tall. Here is the variegated Macrr. I cheat and shorten the spelling because I can't spell the long name. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/53965/index.html

Molly,
It's beautiful. I think it's Alocasia macrorrhizos. I've been trying to find it on the web - no luck so far. I can find the plant, but not variegated, and I think that's what makes it so special.
Where did you get yours?
Steve
