I'd heard that bulbs from Buggy Crazy are really big, but had not ordered from her until this year. Well, yesterday two bulbs came in the mail. When I opened this one I said Wow! That is a nice sized Gonzilla Bulb!
Really, Really Huge Bulbs!
OMG! I was impressed with the first bulb but that other one ~ yowza!
Would you believe the size of a large cabbage. I almost hate to bury it, it's so pretty.
I was thinking cantalope, myself. lol
I sure hope she gets a site up and doesn't quit. If she doesn't, I asked (begged!) her to please join us here at DG. She seems awfully nice and too great a resource to lose track of.
Her posting on the Lily Auction said that the lilies just cost too much to grow. Wonder if she is going to go into daylilies?
WOW! What great bulbs! Does she have any more? My bunnies will need more lilies to eat come spring.
Here ya go:

Gotta feed those bunnies! ;-)
Hmmm--looks good but I'll have to wait a few days. There is a Lily Society Sale in Des Moines this Saturday that I'm going to to replace a few bulbs.
And llilyfan has some wonderful bulbs for sale too. Got to check out her list. The ones she traded /sold me last year all bloomed true & wonderful DESPITE the bunnies & frost!
And my replacement bulbs showed up yesterday from Bloomingbulb and need to go in plus dig up & move the incorrect bulbs they sent last year. Fun & games! :)
Moby, that looks kinda like a brain.....a dirty brain....wait a minute....Moby, are you showing us your dirty mind again???!!!! LOL
How did you know? Was it the loose wires sticking out??
Yup, that was it!
Did you get that one from Buggycrazy Moby? She must feed her bulbs steroids or something.
I did not see any godzilla listed : can't wait to see your pics when it blooms :)
Yep, buggycrazy strikes again.
I ordered 3 bulbs from her yesterday after seeing this thread.I can't wait to see them.
There are a couple of hundred bulbs waiting for me to plant. Two orderers I haven't even received yet.November is bulb planting time for us.It is still in the 80's here.
I received a big box of bulbs from Blue Stone yesterday and haven't even opened it yet.It is the 50% off bulbs I ordered last week.
Sounds like you're going to be busy!
Godzilla is in the photo at the top of this link:

Is it possible to direct-order from her? If so, HOW?
That's the nice thing about bloomingauction, you are ordering directly from her. Go for it!
i won the huge godzilla one-20.00 but it should be HUGE
Notmartha, the smaller bulb above is the Gonzilla. It cost more than the really huge KIng Kong one, but I think it's worth the price. I bet it is at least 5 years old. Just received my order from The Lily Nook last week and the bulbs look puny compared to the buggycrazy ones. Now I need to get them planted! Time is running out.
Susan
Hi, lincolntess--
I was seduced into looking at buggycrazy's site after looking at your huge bulbs and saw this group of Orientals on close-outs which I thought looked like a good deal (for me, at least, being new at this)...what do you think? Or maybe I should go for a single kind.
http://www.thebloomingauction.com/detail.asp?id=15599
but what I thought was interesting was the explanation that she gave that these lilies were so high maintenance that they were going to discontinue them...I wonder how much of her inventory she is giving up....perhaps she is going out of business?
mgh, the rabbits aren't really going to get your beautiful bulbs, are they?
I was wondering, too, on those giant bulbs, how many flowers or stems do you get from one bulb? With 20 dollars invested, I would think quite a few, not?
Thanks. t.
Nope, no bunnies in my yard. I was just showin Wanda where she could get more lilies to feed the bunnies in her yard. ;-)
It looked to me like the King Kong Bulb had at least 4 stems last year. I'm guessing it should have that many or more next year. I think the mixed bulbs sound like a good deal. I don't do as well with Orientals as the Orientpets, Asiatic, trumpets and some of the other crossed lilies. I don't use any chemicals on my bulbs and I do lose some of them to viruses each year. I think a lot depends on the area of the country you live in. Some I've grown for many years without problems. Also, My bulbs don't get to the size of buggy-crazy's. It sounded to me like she was not going to be selling them after this year. I would not want to if it involved using that many chemicals to keep them healthy. I'll post photos of these 2 huge ones when they bloom. Can't wait to see them.
Susan
Thanks Susan for all the good info.
I agree, waaaaay too many chemicals, I've always just shoved mine in, and left them alone, and they go bonkers all on their own ,( and that's all kinds, orientals, asiatics, etc) - maybe it's where she lives?
I find orientals seem to increase by one or two stems a year, and asiatics and martagons by many more - I've got a patch of palest pink asiatic that went from a couple of stems to a huge clump in 3 years.
Ooh--that's exciting about the increases! I planted some (20) orientals and asiatics last year so I'm hoping to see a good show next summer. Then added 40 more orientals and orienpets last week--soooo I'm excited! I hope mine like their spots in the garden!
Maybe I worry too much about the critters...should I put chicken wire around/over them?
I bought some 'hardware cloth' too but it looks like rather small gauge--1/2 inch--and maybe the lilies can't grow through it.
What kind of critters do you worry about? 40 more lilies! What kinds?
2zeus ~ I wish I had your increase with the oriental lilies!
we get very mild winters here - next year I'll post some pictures when my "lily garden" down the side of the house is in full bloom - the scent of the orientals is just intoxicating to walk through...
I agree, can't have too many. If they bloomed all year, I'd have nothing but those. Delish!
For anyone worried about rabbit or squirrel damage - sprinkle a heavy dose of cayenne pepper (not that expensive at the wholesale clubs) or else, for rabbits, spread blood meal. You don't have to reapply after a rain. It's especially important as the new growth emerges in springtime.
I've never fed a single Oriental or Asiatic - ever - only at the initial planting time.
I was told years ago to feed lilies after they bloom, when the bulb is storing up nutrients for next year's blooms - but I never do - they seem to manage just fine with one dose of home-made compost as top dressing in early early spring, before they put in an appearance.
my critters are rabbits, squirrels, moles, voles, deer... Thanks Pirl, I will try the cayenne idea. Haven't used that yet. I wonder if the deer hate it too. I planted Frittillaria Crown Imperials to try to keep the deer away next spring...don't think it will do too much for July and August lily bloom, though.
These are my new lilies--
RED HOT ORIENPET
TOUCHING ORIENPET
And Arena, Dizzy. Excelsior and Mojave Orientals from Van Engelen Lily Collection http://www.vanengelen.com/catview.cgi?_fn=Item&_recordnum=6516&_category=Website%20Specials
Also planted 10 Eremurus--I wonder how that will work out.
Next year I want to make a new sun garden with plenty of room for some of Buggycrazy's special selections.
already had Star Gazer, Mona Lisa, Regale, and a few others....nothing rare or exciting to die hard lily fanciers, I fear, but they made wonderful bouquets!
The rabbit population around here seems to vary a lot from year to year. When it is really bad, I find that making collars about 9" tall will keep the rabbits away until the lilies are tall enough that they leave them alone. They seems to like the new, green shoots best. The last couple years I have not lost many, but I think that is due to all the cats guards in my yard. Sometimes I plant one of the slow releasing bulb tablets with my lilies when I plant them, but don't find they need much fertilizing , if any. Sounds like you have a nice collection Tabasco. I keep adding a few more new ones each year. I love them all.
Susan
t ~ if you have a real problem with burrowing critters, you might want to 'line' your lily plot with hardware cloth.
I have lots of squirrels; they like to dig in the freshly turned soil but I've never had them dig up a lily bulb. But I do have vicious rabbits! One year a rabbit bit off a Stargazer stem that was about to bloom. That stem was thick ~ at least the size of a dime. Evil wabbits.......
i shoot the rabbits around here.
I do when I can!
Earlier this summer, the SWAT team got called out and a 2 block area evacuated. Someone reported "man with a gun!" It turned out to be some old guy shooting rabbits with with a BB gun.
I'd rather not have that be my 15 minutes of fame.
