Poppy somniferon

can anyone tell me how long it takes for the pod to ripen before I cut it? I would like save the seed on a few varieties for next year.

hostjim1, I can't tell you exactly how long it will take for the pods to mature, since I suppose weather conditions would be a variable. I harvest lots of somniferum seeds, however, and it is usually the last thing in the fall before heavy rains start. I try to let them mature on the plant before harvesting the pods. They will turn brown and holes will start to form along the underside of the cap of the pod.

In nature, winds and passing critters would shake the seeds out to scatter them, but, we seed collectors would harvest them first. On occasion, when the rains start before the pods are ready, I have brought them in and left them to dry on the cut stems, but maturing seed on the living plant is best, in my opinion.
