Is this lily fasciated?

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

This lily is only about 2 ft high and has at least 30 buds....this is the first year after planting last fall....Not sure which it is...planted 3 in one area, but I think it is Lilium pumilum or viva....

Yes, the flat stem certainly could indicate so. I think it is.

Yes, certainly is. Funnily enough, saw another one - also Pumilum - last night in a Winnipeg garden. Just think of all the lovvely seeds you can collect from this stem.

The stem is much thicker than many other lilies that are a bit taller, but still round. I thought it was a bit exuberant...I may have another doing the same thing. This was from the Lily Garden coop. I will have to try collecting seeds this year....haven't done it yet. I do have a few sprouting from seed I bought from the Lily Garden....(it'll be a miracle if they make it to blooming, but I have hope)

Very interesting ~ lucky you! I was just reading at BD Lilies:

"....Only about 1 in 10,000 lily bulbs create a fasciated stem, most likely due to environmental fluctuations. The next growing season produces a normal stem, or even two, if the bulb has divided."

WOW! I can't imagine the stem will hold!

When it does bloom, maybe you ought to send a pic to Lily Garden. They might appreciate seeing something like that.

update...these are so shiny and petite....some of the upper buds have fallen off....but if all that are there bloom....23! (What is normal for this type?) L. pumillum
