Heirloom Poppy Seeds

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Let's keep track of our investments in the heirloom poppies; please post info about germination and saving seed

This is a poppy shared with me from cottosnag a couple of years ago.

Here are the links and info gathered by various DGers during the Co-Op.
Hopefully it will help us all in identification as we grow them and we can put pictures in the plantfiles as they bloom.

This is another one that bloomed for me last year from Cheryl; It looks to be "Pink Peony".

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

I have that one in the first pic I think. It self sows every year. I was just doing some watercolor paintings of it the other day. Think I got it from Select Seeds.

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

TwinLakesChef: Are all of the other poppies listed above also self sowers?
Just noticed that you are from Manson, IA. Where is that? We are in NE IA...

8 miles from Athens, OH(Zone 6a)

The "plant" portion of my poppies is seemingly doing well, but as of yet, no blossom buds. I got heirloom, pink peony and Lauren's grape. They "look" more like lettuce leaves than the fuzzy leaves of my perennial Orientals. How are the ones you all have planted looking?? I posted a few pictures of the plants in my diary under my "herb garden" tab. If I ever get blooms I'll post pics here.

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

Darleen: My heirloom poppies look like lettuce too. i think the cool blue-grey of the foliage is a beautiful contrast with other foliage. And the seed pods will be very decorative also. I think the heirloom seed is a mix of colors, pink to lavendar...let me know what lauren's grape looks like when it blooms, ok?

Thanks for the links TwinLakesChef!

I started lots of different somniferum poppies for my nursery this year, and I've been planting 6 of each to large pots to collect seed later on. It is my plan to separate them out around the yard to minimize the possibility of cross pollination. Hopefully, I'll have lots of seeds to trade this fall. Wish I lived closer to some of you. I've been giving seedlings away rather than have them bolt in the cell packs. Hopefully I'll have some pictures this summer, as well. I've got about 12 pots planted, but they are still small. It's early in the season for us.

Caitlin
You live where the trees are so beautiful in the Fall. I am in North Central Iowa . . . 20 miles West of Fort Dodge on Highway 7. We live on Twin Lakes which is 5 miles from Manson or Rockwell City.

So far only my California Poppies have bloomed. The jury is still out on the rest.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey, I do want to say about the co-op. I bought a pack of each and was not surprised at the quantities considering what I paid.

I made a half hearted attempt and threw some out in my garden. I have poppies! Yellow, pink, and can't remember the other color. Anyway, I plan on doing it 'right' this fall and can't wait to see if I get better results!

Nicole

The heirloom (above pic) bloomed purple! Didn't get a picture of it, but did get a shot of the next poppy to bloom. However, that was this morning and I had to go to work. Will try to send photo tonight.

Anybody know if Nadi is still selling on eBay?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey Darleen! I have that top one that's pink! You won't believe this though.. At least I'm still alive to tell about it. When it first started growing it was in an old lettuce bed. Since others of my lettuce had self seeded from the last year I assumed.... and guess what I did? I ate some ! ARRGGH!! I ate the leaves in a bed of mixed greens but am none the worse for wear.

Nicole

8 miles from Athens, OH(Zone 6a)

oh, m'gosh! Well, I can see why you "thought" it was lettuce. Right now I think all the plants look just like lettuce that has bolted. So, how was it? J-u-s-t kiddin!

This morning I woke to a bright fire engine red one. Ran out in my bare feet to get a shot of it right away. Looks like some pinks are about to bloom, too.

I don't think the blooms last very long, maybe a day or so. Could be the nature of the plant, or it could be this heat. 90's without rain.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

My blooms don't seem to last long either. Tasty though! LOL!!! It didn't taste weird when I ate it!

I have an unknown rose that I received in an in person trade through DG. Well the darned thing bloomed and I never saw it!! I hope I get to see another - I don't even know what color it is! It was in Sugarweed's mom's yard and she doesn't know either. I have rose hips though! LOL!

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

If you save the seeds or let them self sow, make sure you save a variety of colors. For some reason my self sowers are all lavendar-pink. I have another pack that I think I will sow this fall in another place...

8 miles from Athens, OH(Zone 6a)

Somewhere I read that removing the seed pod will keep the poppy plant blooming. So how do you know when NOT to remove, like the one that's there will be the LAST one that's there??

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

Good question. I never have tried to keep the plant blooming, because the pods are so decorative too. But you don't need that many seedpods - each one has zillions of seeds - so just keep deadheading as long as you feel like it! These annual poppies are individual stalks, not one big plant, so you could have some that you deadhead and some that you don't I guess.

8 miles from Athens, OH(Zone 6a)

Okey dokey! So here's a picture of the beautiful red!

Thumbnail by Darleen
8 miles from Athens, OH(Zone 6a)

And the pale pink with the rose?? pink

Thumbnail by Darleen
8 miles from Athens, OH(Zone 6a)

And my final one: pink peony. Mine don't seem as bright as yours TwinLakes Chef. Maybe the pink peony doesn't like full sun?

Editing to say that I've been judiciously cutting off the seed heads and all of mine are continuing to bloom. Only one has given up the ghost and died back, so I did not save seed from it. I'm thinking of saving only the beautiful pink peony and the fire engine red one.

I have some nice ones too. These are all volunteers from last year. Out of all the co-op poppy seeds I bought only a few California poppies germinated and they did not survive.

Here is a pale lavender double Papaver somniferum. I also have the single in the same color.

Thumbnail by NoH2O
Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

My favorite is this single pink. It is actually a clear shell pink with lavender/gray blotches. The color in the picture has a little too much blue in it.

Just reporting in that none of my co-op seeds made it.

But I have lots of California Poppies and can collect seed if anyone is interested in trading.

Capistrano Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

i have an heirloom somniferum that i can't get to germinate... they're in a window that get a little sun all day and the room is about 60 all the time... is this too cold for stratification?

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I also have lots of red California poppies. Last night I collected Oriental poppy seed from my peach poppy (unknown name, perrenial). Lots to share! Dmail me with ur request and addy, I'll do the rest, until they're gone.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Some of my poppies were successful this year, and some were not. I haven't looked around Seward gardens to see if fellow gardeners in the area might have been more successful than I with some of them. An early hot spell caused some to bolt. I will, however have lots of Flemish Antique seed. This is, in fact, an heirloom somniferum. It is the peony-like plant often depicted in old Flemish paintings. It does come back true from seed.

Thumbnail by Weezingreens
Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I will also have lots of Corn Poppy seeds. I sold them to the City of Seward this spring and they put them around a local monument. There will be lots and lots of seeds.

Thumbnail by Weezingreens
Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I will also have seeds from Swansdown, a pure white double with the feathered petals. I don't know if this one is heirloom.

Thumbnail by Weezingreens
Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

None of mine from the co-op came up, and I didn't plant any other poppies. Nothing to trade. :-( Weezingreens, I did want to tell you that your white columbines and foxgloves were so gorgeous this year! I've never seen any so huge.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Hi, Pins! Are you talking about the plants I sent you? If so, I'm so glad the foxglove recouperated. As for the white one, I think I sent 'Green Apple' which seems to be a white barlow with a bit of a green tinge. White flowers in the garden are so striking, especially those that will live in shade.

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

Yes, I am talking about the plants you sent. Thanks for naming the white columbine. It was so pretty this spring.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

You are more than welcome, Pins. I'm so glad they did well for you.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Any one have seed for the following perennial poppies?

1-Pink Ruffles
2-Royal Wedding
3-Kleine Tanzerin
4-Pattys Plum

I also have a dp. purple annual poppy that I collected seed from, if any one is interested?

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Maxine,
I only have the California poppy and I am collecting seed for you. None of my others did anything.
