Anyone know the best way to propagate a Morning Glory Bush (Ipomoea carnea)?

Busybee sent me a cutting in the mail last spring. She told me to stick it in water and it would send out roots. I thought sure, right. I (in my ignorance)thought this woody stemmed branch probably close to 1/2 inch in diameter. I was so skeptical. But you already can guess the "rest of the story". It rooted and rooted well so easily; seems like it took a bit of time though. I kept it by my kitchen sink and changed water if it got murky. I had the prettiest plant then last summer and it bloomed and bloomed. It was a pale pink. It was not hardy here; it didn't survive. I don't keep heat in my greenhouse at this time either.

Mine is in full bloom right now but the person I got it from last year was trying to train it into a standard but it resisted and has a couple of side branches so I've been thinking about cutting the top back to encourage more bushing but hate to waste a good cutting. The blooms are pretty.
