Co-op lilies are yours coming up ?

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Got to play outside today. I have lilies popping up everywhere. Some slower than others and some no sign of yet. Do certain ones come up sooner than others? I mean like Asiatic before Oriental etc.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Hi Mystic, I say the Asiatiic comes out a little ahead of the Oriental here. Bobbie says hello and she says they come up at the same time. No difference. My Oriental never get to be large for some reason. They have buds on them and they are only 6-8 inches tall. Don't understand it. I must be not giving them something that they need, Maybe I need to move them. Our Asiatic have really spread this year. Good luck with them.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

From what I've read, Asiatics tend to bloom at least a month earlier than Orientals. This is my first year growing them, but my Asiatics are much larger and some even have flower buds on them. As for the Orientals, most of them are less than 6" tall.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Almost all of my lilies are up to some degree, but most of the Asiatics are well ahead of the Oriental.

I only bought orientals, and the bulbs are coming up. The foliage looks more like asiatics, though.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi Jim and Bobbie, well it seems my Asiatics are way ahead of the others too. Thanks everybody for the replies sounds like we all agree the Asiatics come up first I think I am seeing signs of all of mine now except a couple. We should have some great pictures later.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

You bet! I'm really looking forward to this year ~ I'm up to 28 now, most new.

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Good...I'm glad to hear that some come up later than others. I was so afraid that I had lost some of them through the winter.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Darius, in my experience, the foliage on the Oriental and Asiatic looks about the same, just more dense on the Asiatics.

Moby... hmmm I'll have to look more closely, and at the foliage of some orientals from last year that are in a pot.

At any rate, something is breaking ground! I still have a pack of 5 that were overlooked in my hydrator drawer in the fridge that are sprouting. Guess I need to get them planted. : )

might be time... ;)

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi guys,

I can't wait for the lilies to bloom this year...I added 30+ to my many beds and borders, and will be taking pics with my new digital..:)

Hey Moby, since I am newer to lilies..could you show us an Oriental vs. an Asiatic foliage pic so we could maybe see the small differences you mentioned?? Like one being a bit fuller...I can't see any differences, but don't quite know what to look for...

If not, thats OK, just curious...

Have a great day!

Well, OK....even though I had to fish my camera out of my suitcase....which is a good thing because I realized I forgot my battery charger. Yikes!

I don't think I have any really good pics of folliage, but you can get an idea

Here is a Monte Negro sprout

And an O. Stargazer sprout

It's about 3 times as tall as the previous pic, which is an asiatic.

This is Monte Negro now, at about a foot tall.
Slim leaves and lots of them!

Stargazer from a couple of years ago.
Leaves are much more broad and widely spaced.

Moby,

Thank-you for the pics...it helped show thr differences really well. I went out into my garden and looked at the various lilies, and I started to see the differences, which was nice because although I labeled them...I didn't write Asiatic, or Trumpet, Oriental, or Orienopet.....I will next year when I plant the 100+ I am going to order....according to my wish list anyway...LOL :o)

Going by what you said above, this one is probably an Asiatic....Right??.....LOL :o)

I'd say you're probably right on the Oriental, but the first one I would guess...hmm....let me think....a Trumpet?? ;) Good growing!

If I don't peek in sooner, I'll you all in about 2 weeks.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh my gosh...It is! I just noticed my own label (what a dork I am...LOL!!!)...Triumphator...A really big and beautiful Trumpet! Moby...you are good! :o)

Later......

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8b)

That is a wonderfully beautiful lily....what is the name???

Nice pic!!
Jamie

Thanks! I believe it's Asiatic Lily "Coral Sunset".

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

I can hardly wait for mine to bloom.

Springboro, OH

I've been watching and watching for my co-op lilies to come up. I've never planted these before so wasn't sure what I was looking for. But, tonight I finally see the buds coming up! I'm really excited! Unfortunately, one of them has been broken off probably due to my three year old and his motorized JEEP!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

JeniLyn, I know how ya feel. One of mine was conquered by my 4½ year old and his plastic sword. I'm just glad he only got one of them! LOL

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks for posting the pics everybody. It's a good thing I looked at this thread! Fogot where I planted the lilies and thought some of my lilies were weeds! Yikes. I think I pulled one (only), thank goodness. t.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Jamie,

Methinks time you joined your local lily society. There has to be one near you. Even THINKING about buying 100 diff. lilies at one time would give me a heart attack. You are so lucky, living in the middle of the best N. American lily growing area.

If you are interested in species lilies, think about the Species Lily group as well.!!!
Cheers

Inanda~

Oh my....if only I could order 100 lilies, and if only I had room for them and if only my poor back would allow me to plant them...my WISH LIST is 100+ long, but I always dream HUGE, then scale back to Large, then actually order small....LOL ;o)

I am a member of HPSO (Hardy Plant Society of Oregon) and NARG (North American Rock Garden Society), but should look into a Lily society....maybe volunteer to work on thier spring sale, arrange a co-op, do a bulb swap, organize a ........

Oh - excuse me, got carried away again, why do I always do that...LOL ;)

Have a GREAT day!!

Just don't plant 159 lily bulbs and then move a few months later!!! Been there, done that.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Oh my gosh Bren! 159 bulbs?!!! Are you going to be able to dig them and take them with you?

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Not all of them. I've already ordered some of the cultivars this spring and am planting them at my new house. I'm gonna get some of the ones I was really looking forward to that I've not replaced. Philos, Duo, Triumphator, Madonna lily, Loreto, Copper Crown, and my martagon. That's a few off the top of my head. There were a bunch of pixies I planted too that I'd still like to get.

I'm trying to focusing on daylilies right now as they cost me more money to replace than the lilies, but the lilies are next along with my primroses (which btw are gorgeous in bloom!).

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Don't forget the possiblilty of a rescue mission before the MORU. See you guys in a couple of days.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)
