It will take years to get blooms from a seed.
The easy way to do it is to buy a tree wisteria, they are grafted onto a trunk. Or you can get a vine, with one primary vine, stake it, keep it trimmed to the point you want to start your tree fx. In about four or five years you should have a fairly large truck that would support the canopy. Or you could braid several vines and give it a twisted look in the trunk. Hope this helps, good luck.

it won't be cheap, at least not in my area

Imzadi, I wouldn't grow wisteria from seed because it can take five or more years to flower. The easy way is to buy one grafted and already shaped like that for you. River Rock nursery has them: http://www.rdrop.com/users/green/plantit/

Or you could take a rooted cutting and start shaping it. You would take a main branch and stake it straight and removed all the lower branches. If there is no main branch, you can cut all the branches back to the base and let it send up a new one. This process could take a few years. You would continue, year after year, to remove all lower branches and prune the upper ones for more branching. Here's a good web site on pruning and shaping: http://www.plantamnesty.org/pruning_tips/pt_wisteria.htm

Here are a couple of mine which are shaped as trees:

Clare, if you continue to share these excellent shopping tips DH is going to DEMAND I get a job to pay for all these plants!!!!! I've contacted them on wisteria tree to see if cheaper than what I can get here.

BTW your trees are gourgeous. I guess you don't let it roam, just keep it sort of round. is that right?

LOL, Nery! My DH is pretty much demanding that I get a job to pay for this little hobby of mine and then some! LOL! I got three of my wisterias from River Rock and was very pleased with them and still have all three. Two of them are double purples ones, but they haven't bloomed for me yet. Do you mean that I keep the shape of the tree round and the branches trimmed and don't them them grow too long? Actually, the one on the left has a lot of trailing branches, and I should probably prune them. Some of them will be touching the ground before long. I went to get another picture of it, but the wind is blowing so hard right now that I can't get a good picture of it. Yes, I do prune the branches, but I always leave a couple of nodes so that it will branch again and again.

Clare, you have a beautiful yard.

Ada, you are too kind. It looks pretty awful in that last picture, and the grass is terrible too. You are just too sweet!

I wish I had your climate. LOL You grow some beautiful plants

Sorry I don't have the actual link to put in my post, but in the photos forum, doss has pics of her garden. She has a HUGE vine trained as a tree... beautiful. Now that I think of it, it might be a clematis, but the idea is the same...

Hugs :)

Went back and got it... here's the link. The pic is of a clematis tree, but she says in the thread that she's training a wisteria now...

This isnt a great picture, but here is my wisteria growing as a tree. I actually took several branches and braided them and staked them. When the lower part would put out a shoot, I cut it off. Over time, it ha grown into a small tree. Each year , the base gets thicker and thicker.
