I intend to plant a meadow with wild flowers. The area has already been seeded with lawn grass. Will the wild flowers be able to compete with the grass or should I just turn the whole area under again and start from scratch.

Hi Louisa
It really depends on the species of grass and flowers you intend to grow. Tall, fast growing species of grass are unsuitable where small downland plants are grown, prairie/meadow plants are much better suited to being planted in grass.
I have about 10 tall grass species in the wild garden (not sown by me) and I find the more aggressive flowers do much better. I pulled up some grass (this imitates the action of browsing cattle) and found the Ajuga flowering under 2ft of grass.
What are you thinking of growing?
Thanks Baa - mainly Virginia native plants. I figured that 'domestic' grass would be too strong.
