What post where?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

This morning several of you received a note from me, saying one (or more) of your threads had been moved.

Most of the threads I relocated were originally posted to this forum, which is a bit like my hall closet - full of stuff I don't know where else to put. It's easy to rely on the General Discussion forum for posting anything and everything, but it gets pretty jumbled in here - hard to find what you're looking for.....just like my hall closet ;o)

Please remember we have over 100 forums (and many more have been requested!) - and each of them exists because enough people asked for a special place to discuss a particular subject. If you don't seek out and use the appropriate forum, two things happen:

1) your thread may not be seen by the people who are most interested in that subject, and could give you the best advice; and

2) the forum eventually gets archived because no one uses it :-(

Thank you, Terry. The Garden Talk room has comfy chairs with footrests and a lovely view. :)

Terry, please come clean out my hall closet!!!

Terry...How do I access something that is in a closed forum...like info on gourds that I need to look at again...and again? Jo

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

If you remember the name of the thread (or get close) I can pull it into the general Vegetable Gardening forum....

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Jo, am not Terry, but if u have watched the thread before, u can click tab "my info" above. this will open a window, click "view the threads you are watching", you should be able to find what u are looking for in ur list of watched threads.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

MaVie, that works in most cases, but when a forum has been taken offline, I'm not sure members can access those threads. Could be wrong, tho - Jo, it's definitely worth a try!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Terry, i do not know about thread/s taken offline. i always go back to old threads i have watched in the past. most come up for me. good example is this old thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/109277/

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

Terry,
I have no idea how to post a question. I think I have yet to do it right.
I dont want to waste your space posting in the wrong place.
This morning, I did a search and found a zoo compost post.
So I posted there. Wellll. That is a forum for pictures. Obviously, not where my question belongs. How in heaven's name, do I add a question?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

iamakylady53, here is some help: http://davesgarden.com/faq/forums/#129 and if you need further assistance, please feel free to ask - if another member can't help you, Dave or I can ;o)

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Boy - when I first started at Dave's, I got so many emails about how my thread was placed somewhere else, can't tell you how many times! After awhile you get the hang of it. Once in awhile, though, it really can be difficult to find the right spot for the right question. I've had to post in two different forums, occasionally, to get an answer. i.e. propagation for seeds for a tropical. Propagation or Tropical? I've found that, for that instance, I'd get a better response from the tropical forum, just because the people frequenting that forum knew the answer, but they didn't frequent the propagation forum. I do wish more people would visit the propagation forum. I don't get a whole lotta luck there.

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

Terry, what does sticky mean at the end of these last three threads from you and Dave?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

It means it's "stuck" at the top - it won't slide down the page even though other threads have newer posts. (Kind of like a post-it or sticky note you put up as a reminder to yourself ;o)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

It's summer re-run season, I guess - I moved a lot of posts again today, so I'm bumping up the message to repeat this friendly reminder.

Sometimes I think we have a classic Catch-22: we add more forums because people enthusiastically ask for them, but as the list of forums grows, people forget to look through the forum list, or they don't take the time to match their thread to a particular forum, and post it here.

Then the Gen. Disc. becomes a bulging hodge-podge of garden stuff, family stuff, pest and disease questions, etc. Let's all try a little exploration - you just never know what you might find growing in Dave's Garden ;o)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It's tough because the many forums have made browsing DG kind of overwhelming at times; I think people post in General Discussion and other more generalized forums because posts in the highly-specialized forums don't get very many viewers. But the hodgepodge doesn't work too well, either! You're right, it is a Catch-22!

Mississauga, ON(Zone 6a)

Terry, what IS the best way to find the forum that's going to reach the most people who are going to be interested in your post, and by the same token return the most replies.

Adding more forums does not seem like a really good idea.

I get lost here, as it is, as I am used to a much simpler form of forum.

Fun intended!

I think a quick glance through the Forums descriptions (go to the Forums tab, scroll down, and you'll see an alphabetical listing of all forums, with a brief description of each) will help determine where to post your question.

Most of the forums are topical (ID, Pets, Perennials, etc.) or regional (Canada, Texas, California, etc.) and just considering whether your question/comment is better suited to those who live in your region, or those interested in a particular topic will help you make a quick and easy decision.

You know what would be really really cool? If, like the 'watched' threads alerts, everyone got a little red tagline up top on the day when a new forum is created letting us know! :)

Is there a connifer forum? Has anyone any experience with the Australian Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis)? This plant has its own websight. www.wollemipine.com

Terry,

Is there a place where member gardeners who create garden related products can talk about it?

I'm a bit reluctant to ask, but garden art whether it enhances the look of your garden's ambiance or that of the walls of your home is it a topic allowed at DG?

The reason I ask is that this past summer I was in a place that sells my floral prints. I was introduced by the owners to a young girl that was making the purchase of one of my floral pieces.

She told me that her grandfather was a life long flower gardener whose passion was sunflowers. She also said that in the past year he no longer had the strength to garden and the print she was purchasing would make his birthday so very special.

When I heard this, I got the same wonderful feeling I used to get when friends and family would smile as they strolled through my South Burlington flower garden.

Where would I post this type of conversation without being out of place or breaking any DG rules?

I guess after being gone for the past two years and just renewing my membership today, it is best I get some of this question out of the way.

Also my personal website which has my floral artwork also has my photography of Vermont foliage. Would it be considered off-topic because of this or are trees ok even if I did not grow them and only recorded their beauty?

Because my site offers the possibility of making a purchase, that is if one looks hard enough, is it still ok? Please look and let me know the answers to these questions.

The piece called "Three Suns Of We" is the one the young girl gave to her grandfather.

Good to be back,

Jerry, it's good to have you back, and your artwork is as beautiful as ever, I see ;o)

The Acceptable Use Policy provides firm guidelines about mentioning personal and business websites and other organizations. (Unfortunately, discussions of that nature often slide from conversation to sales pitch.) I recommend a quick reading of the AUP for everyone - newbie or long-time member, as we can all probably stand a refresher course every now and then.

We do have a Garden Art forum, and discussing artwork there is permitted, but bringing your own website into the discussion would be frowned upon.

Montgomery Center, VT(Zone 3b)

Thank you Terry. I see your point and am glad I asked. This way I can be within the guidlines. And any way if one wanted to find out more information they can always Google the person's name on their own time and spend more time here talking about gardening. Thanks again for the info.

Chicago, IL

There needs to be a search field that one can locate easily on the main page.
Maybe there should be a search just for a forum name. If possible a smart search that would list reasonable options if an exact match was not found.
The alphabetical listing option should be more prominent as well.
Multiple forums is a good thing, but there are too many for a person of normal ability to sift through, sorry. I don't think it's valid at this point to blame miscategorizing on people "not taking the time". I'm a more seasoned internet and computer user than most here, and I'm overwhelmed.

Chicago, IL

OK, I figured out that "Garden talk" is kind of a main forum page, and there's a search box there.
Trouble is I never click that since the fora are all displayed on the home page; I didn't associate "garden talk" with the forums.
Then, there really needs to be just one alphabetical forum list. I can see why one would think to categorize it, but ll I wanted was the stinkin' "vines and climbers" forum and it took me way too long to find it.

Hey hoa_rd, i was frustrated for quite a while when i first joined also. after a while you will find features that you never knew existed. if vines and climbers is the only forum you are interested in, you can go to that forum and up toward the top on the right hand side you will see a little pair of eyeballs. click on that and you can add that forum to your favorites and it will show on your home page automatically so you can go right there when you log on. we didn't have that feature when i first registered and i like it a lot. if you venture into other forums and find a thread that interests you, there is a "watch thread" feature that you can click on and every time you go to your home page that particular thread will appear if any new posts have been made to it. there are all kinds of really neat built ins that i find all the time. i don't know if you are aware of this but you can create your own private or public diary here and you can also creat a journal that can be private of public which is has become a valuable tool for me. it's always safe here even if i mess up moy computer. i'm not too computer literate so you will probably learn about all that is here faster than i did. it'll be fun, just give it a chance. welcome to you and i hope to see you in more forums than just the vines and climbers.

Quick question. I've been looking, but unsure about where
to post about a well pump for watering plants.

Any suggestions for a good forum to post this on?

If you hope to solar or wind power the pump, try the new Sustainable Alternatives Forum.

I am new and haven't figured out where to post an original query.
Anyway, I recently took a small piece from my brunnera Jack Frost
to start in a small container. It is doing well, tiny, but the leaves are all green instead of silver and green. Does anyone know if this is normal?

Wauseon, OH(Zone 5a)

There is time I am looking for forums and don't know where to go, just like Lawns, Fertilizing your Perennial Garden, and of cause there are others not at hand. My question is how do you find these forum?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Here's the page that has links to all forums: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/ - is that what you meant?

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

Why are these in the Jokes & humor forum..Just curious.
Nightowls 19: Tiptoe thru the tulips, sipping mint juleps Nightowls 18: Spring is here, let green be seen

Hobart, Australia

The plant is Scilla violacea now known as Ledebouria socialis.
Easy to grow - propagate by separating the bulbs, don't keep too dry. Frost hardy but then we don't det much frost here. Common name is squill, relative of bluebell but NOT so invasive!

I'm obviosly a beginner and have NO IDEA how this got here. However I did manage to copy it and repaste in the correct thread again - Ledebourias and things!

Why is it that the forums are clickish.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I don't think that the forums are clickish but are specialized. For example I grow vegetables and roses and would not be interested in the Hibiscus forum etc. It simply is a matter of one's preference! Some have more knowledge than the others and seem to dominate a specific forum because those in the forum have questions that need to be answered by the more experienced as a result the individuals that have the most knowledge on the subject are there to answer the questions. That's all!

Shepherd, MT

I am highly knowledged on the subject but the forums has there circle of friends

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I really don't see the harm? They still answer all questions and are only too glad to help! Daves Garden is not a cold forum like some others that I used to be on. Participate in the discussions and become known. I've been here about five or more years and have only been disappointed with a similiar situation only once but realized that I may misunderstood the reply.

Crossville, TN

I have found that you "make friends by being a friend"...and I am happy to say that I feel at home on any forum...and I am a lousy gardener...I think I GROW friends!!

I went to a town about 80 miles away from me yesterday....I seldom go there...and who did I run into but Farizona....who lives in anorther town all together. We made it our business to meet each other about 6 years ago...and love getting together in person. Jo
