Can you propogate christmas cactus by dividing it, or does it have to be by cuttings?
Thanks,

Christmas Cactus
It is so easy to take cuttings, even larger ones that I've never divided the few I have. I do have about 3 pots that started out as multiple cuttings in the same pot. Those could be divided without damaging the rest.
Cuttings can be as small as 3 or 4 pads per cutting so the overall effect on your mother plant is minimal. A big Christmas catus in bloom is breath taking.
I had one for almost 40 year. I started it as a cutting from my mother's Christmas catus when I was in college. It was one of the few plants that went every where I went. At it's best, it was in an 18" ceramic pot with a width, measured from tip to tip, of about 3' in diameter. When we moved to Texas 3-1/2 years ago, I had to leave it behind. I have a small cutting from it now.
