Long Gourd Seeds

Byron, IL(Zone 4a)

Recently watched a television show showing long gourd in competition. I had never seen such a thing, and am interested in trying. I can't seem to locate where to get the seeds or what is best. Anyone know anything about these?

impifish - for many years i have grown an italian edible gourd called "cucuzzi"
this thing is grown just like a zucchini and is prepared in the kitchen the same way. the difference is if you let this vegetable grow it will become sometimes four feet or more long. i have eaten them at every length stage, from 7 inches to 4 feet and it still taste terrific. the package says that the fruits become hard shelled gourds at maturity.. the seeds i get are from the new england seed co in hartford ct. web site is www.neseed.com
one word of warning. these things will overtake your garden so it is best to plant them away from other crops. i have mine on a large trellis but you can also leave them to grow on the ground. the leaves of this plant are the size of an elephants ear.
good luck . frank

Like Herbie's cucuzzi, I think the ones you are looking for are a species of Lagenaria. I found a site that offers competition-grade seeds, including giant gourds of all kinds, so if you want to win some prizes, their stock would be the way to go. They aren't cheap, but seeds like theirs are hard to come by. Looks like they have a good review in the Watchdog.
