Look at this Japanese Iris!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

My nephew got this for me for my icon on our family website. I traced it down and am now trying to find where to buy it. Does anyone know? It's name is Iris Kakitsubata, and it was also referred to as a rabbit ear iris.

That is a very beautiful Iris. I added it to my 'wish list' and if I see anything on it... I will let ya know...

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

WOW! Will be watching this thread to see if anyone can find any information. I did a quick search but couldn't find much. Your photo must be of a specific cultivar as kakitsubata and laviegata are listed as one and the same on most of the information I found.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I e-mailed my nephew to run it down. The picture was taken in a park in California.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Ok, you've got me hooked, can't give it up - found this one - close? http://kr.mysearch.myway.com/jsp/GGweb.jsp?fr=70&searchfor=Iris+laevigata&nsa=0. Link to their home page, Species Iris Group of North America http://kr.mysearch.myway.com/jsp/GGweb.jsp?fr=70&searchfor=Iris+laevigata&nsa=0. I've been at it for over an hour so guess I WILL hang it up for now. I'll let you know if I find anything else.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

I will be watching to see where I can purchase this gorgeous iris.

Apparently the term Kakitsubata is a general term and not specific to this species. So is the term laevigata. I hope someone can find this.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Checked back and found that my hyperlink didn't post properly - here's the real link, http://www.badbear.com/signa/signa.pl?Iris-laevigata and the photo. Looks the same although your nephew's photo is much nicer :)

Good search rcn48, but the second pic on the site could be it too: Iris laevigata "Albopurpurea montrosa"

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Wow! I didn't even see that one - guess after spending over an hour searching, I gave up. Thank you, guess I'll be looking for montrosa to plant in my garden :)

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

John, thanks so much. That's it! Now I have to find where to buy it. Anyone see that in the search?

Moerkerke_Damme, Belgium(Zone 7b)

I want it too now ;-)) Let me know if you'll find it somewhere, guys.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Ok, here's the three nurseries I found doing a quick search. So how many of us are going to order?

http://www.gaiser.org/RidgeTop/hm.iris.html

And a little more expensive, what's the deal?

Here's one of their new introductions, 'Let Freedom Ring'

John, if we find a source, can you order it and have it shipped in Belgium? We have restrictions here and plants go into quarantine for a period of time to make sure they don't harbor any diseases or insects that are not native.

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

They are both beautiful.Jody

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

The one at Durion Nurseries named Colchesterensis looks more like mine than the Montrose, but at $25 (!), it's a moot point. Gaiser's doesn't look as much like mine but the price is right. I'm still a bit puzzled. I really like Iris City Gardens.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

John;
I got Let Freedom Ring , this Aug. hope it dose well its a beauty .

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Woodspirit, I thought the same thing - said to my husband, now I'm confused because Durion's site looked like the pictures were reversed?

Tazzy, where did you get 'Let Freedom Ring', maybe they've got some other beauties we should know about.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

"Let Freedom Ring" almost looks like a daylily...

Moerkerke_Damme, Belgium(Zone 7b)

Woodspirit1, Some nurseries take overseas orders, some not! I just hope to get it here. I know they can't put then plants in a big envelope. But i must be no problem when it's just one or two bareroot plants.
The seeds i send to some members were no problem and arrived well.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I printed out the picture of Colchesterensis at Durion and compared it to my picture. They are indeed the same thing, but not the same picture reversed. So I was wrong about Montrose.
Now I need the iris gurus to find it somewhere that I can actually afford to buy it.........

Moerkerke_Damme, Belgium(Zone 7b)

good luck

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Isn't Colchester a place in England?

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I'd love to order Colchesterensis from Ridge Top Farm (cheap). That's the first link above from rcn.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Well, $6 is better than $25 for sure, but the picture Ridge Top has shows a lot more white than purple, unlike the pic I have and from Durion. I am not sure they are the same one. Or do you all think maybe they just vary a little?

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Here's one for $15 but no photo.
http://www.ensata.com/HTML/PlantPages/species_&_bog.htm

And for $10 with photo. Also explains the difference between colchester and monstrosa.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

Iris cit has never let me down you can order on line and they have very healthy plants .bonus and discounts .

Moerkerke_Damme, Belgium(Zone 7b)

Woodspirit1, Colchester a place in England, that's correct.
It is between london and Ipswitch.
But i never ordered some plants in england, i could ask friends that goes plant hunting. But that would take a long time.

Images are not always what seem. I should try them both, and order them from : http://www.gaiser.org/RidgeTop/hm.iris.html
they just cost 6 dollar for one. you don't have much lose, i think.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I am going to avoid Gaiser. Their pictures shows a lot more white than the others. I will stick with Iris City Gardens.

Moerkerke_Damme, Belgium(Zone 7b)

I don't think that got something the plants to do, maybe that depends about circumstances of the wheater! I got that often whit daylilies.
I would be very pleased if you send a image when they bloom .

Merry Christmas

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

John, Ok I will do that in this forum, but I don't know if I can buy it before next fall.

Moerkerke_Damme, Belgium(Zone 7b)

If i'll get my hands on it i let you now too.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Thanks. It's kind of fun to think we are at Dave's Garden at the same time, but a whole ocean apart. What time is it in Belgium? It must be very late at night. It is 7 P.M. here.

Moerkerke_Damme, Belgium(Zone 7b)

Your right, i just would turn off the computer! It's 1.11 am here i get more and more hooked at this place.
I will say goodnight, for you it must be goodevening :-)
Have fun!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Good night!

That is one beautiful show stopper iris.
Do you happen to know the name of it??

Maxine

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

It is Toasted Watermelon. I have only one and hope it bloom this coming spring.
I don't think I'll go to jail (we spell it with a j which is pronounced like your y). But we are not supposed to use pictures others have posted here without permission. I forgot to ask before I posted. To make matters worse, I think laketahoe gave me the one rhizome that I have.
I'll find a way to make it up.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Cool!!!!!!! I have never seen such colors as is in that Toasted Watermelon before. Now that is different and beautiful at the same time. It's so refreshing to see some different colors. I love em all but thats really nice.

Now I want a slice of watermelon and the salt shaker to go with it. Wonder if it will make as many seeds as a watermelon does. :)

Thanks for sharing the pic and getting the taste buds to watering!

Merry Christmas!!

Ella
