question about winter sowing of lily seeds?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Has any one ever sowed formosan [Phillipine] lily seeds in a container and set it outside in a protected place?

I just planted some this morning and put the container out in a protected place. container was a plastic container that contained a birthday cake for grandchildren. I keep most everything!

How bout Lily of the Nile? Can they also be sown in container of dirt and put outside like the above mentioned?
Forgot to mention that container has a cover. We drilled holes in bottom for drainage, put in peanut thingies and drilled holes in covers.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Maxine

I'm not in your zone but neither of these plants survive a heavy frost, the lily is hardy in zone 7 if in a sheltered area and the Lily of the Nile (assuming this is Agapanthus) will depend on the species but even the hardiest can struggle in zone 7.

Do you have a cool but frost free area these could over winter in?

Yea, in my fruit cellar. I was under the impression that the seeds would be OK planted in dirt in a container left in a protected place?

I know that they are hardy only to zone 7, but planned on having them potted and bringing them in the fall and putting in fruit cellar. Cold and no light or windows in there.

Perhaps someone who's sown these in your zone will pop in and tell us how they fared?

They both want warmth to germinate. Cold anywhere won't do it. They want between 75 - 80 degrees of warmth. to germinate. Then a slightly colder room under lights will do for growth.

Thanks Inanda for your info. I had brought them in and put them on top of the water heater in our furnace room. Will check on them every few days or so, to see how they are coming.

Thanks also to Baa for her info.

Seems like you can garden all your life and still come up with questions. I know that I can.

Put the seed pots in a ziplock baggie. You do not want them to dry out. Keep an eye on them.

As soon as they start germinating, then bring them up under lights.

Hi Maxine,

Any germination yet? Don't let them dry out, nor over water them.

Yes, forgot them on top of the water heater, and don't you know it? The dang things sprouted and grew about 3 inches, no color, so now have them in great room [I have a log home] on dining room table in full sun, when the sun shines.
the sun has been very persnickity about shining here. Mostly cloudy!!

Still have lots of seeds, so will see how it goes.

Thanks for all the info.
A day is wasted, if you don't learn something new every day!!

Sun might be too much of a change. A light would be better I think.

Keep us posted as to how they go.
