Does anyone use melaluca to dry their land?

Everglades, FL(Zone 10a)

Someone told me to try melaluca trees (aka paper tree) to dry up our land. It supposed to act like a sponge.

The history of it here is that the Everglades was seeded with it at the turn of the 20th century because of its success in Austraila. It turned out to really take off here. At that time, developers were trying to dry up the Glades. Later , environmentalists came in and wanted to restore the wetlands.

Farmers swear by the melaluca but I don't want to do something wrong. I would like to use it as a windscreen and as a sponge and it is a whole lot cheaper than berms.

I have no experience with this. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
