"My husband and I lived in Fort Lauderdale and had been growing exotic fruit tree seedlings for years, hoping to some day find a chunk of land in Southwest Florida. Finally...we found it! It's a 38 acre junk yard 20 miles east of Everglades City (smack in the middle of the Everglades). It's all we could afford plus we feel we will be doing Mother Nature a service by cleaning up this atrocity. It will take years! Right now we fixed up a dilapidated trailer for a place for me to stay. Our dream is exotic fruit tree groves which we now realize that we need the $ to build irrigation trenches not ony for drainage but for the needed soil elevation for planting of our 100 +- mango trees, 25+- avocados, 50+- carambola, 50+-guava and about 15 sea almonds. We also have many trees such as citrus and exotic fruits. Someday (5 years) we hope to retire there. Any advice would be loved!
6 yrs later....We are still out here and loving it and NO JUNK!" |
