lily ID question

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

Hi, delurking for a bit. I have a couple of questions for you lily experts (I am new to gardening, but have fallen for lilies...hard)
What is your favorite site to help identify a specific lily?
Any ideas for this one? (it came in a mix from White Flower Farm last year. I am hoping it is not one of the ones that got eaten by those blankety-blank voles.) It is downfacing, looks a bit like an orienpet, but I think it was a mix that was suppposed to be Asiatic? alzheimers is definitely setting in.
Thanks!!!

WELCOME to DG, esw!!! Understandable falling hard for Lilies! :-D And we do everything possible here in this forum to enable this type of addiction.

I think you've got an orienpet from the form. I would guess White Henryi but I don't see any papillae on the pic you attached so that's not it.

I like 2 websites the best for pics, but in all honesty I have 12 lily sites total bookmarked.

The Lily Garden

Thanks langbr! I checked back and the two mixes I got last year were a trumpet mix and an asiatic mix. It looks more like an orienpet than a trumpet or asiatic I guess. I wondered if this were Orange Crush..I can't really tell from the pics and I highly doubt it would be included with a mix from WFF as it is a pricy Columbia-Platte introduction and I have only seen it listed from The Lily Garden. Maybe a cousin?
Thanks for the links! I ordered from the Lily garden this year...wonderful bulbs. (too bad I joined too late this year to take advantage of the coop you held.) Maybe next year. I have enjoyed greatly reading about everyone's experiences with lilies. I feel I have learned a lot already.

esw, welcome to DG and watch out for these Lily ladies they'll have you spending ''half the groceries and all the rent'' as Roger used to sing.
Really, plan on pouring over the threads as next year's garden takes shape in my mind. Hope to see you round the forums, now that winter gives you time. ~Blooms

"half the groceries and all the rent" lol
Thanks for the welcome and the warning!
Silly me for having discovered a new 'gotta have' group of plants that requires so much protection from critters...I literally watched them disappearing from the garden over the course of a week until I got smart, dug them up, smashed the vole trails and replanted with various protective devices....We'll see how successful I was in the spring when they all come up - or not.

One of the distinguishing featurs of a lily is the pollen color. Yours looks very similiar to Orange Crush but I agree a $20 lily is not likely in a "mix".

How about American Flame?

Although I don't think this is probably it either. I'll keep my eyes open when I'm surfing.

Looks close...I think the pollen is a bit darker on American Flame. I can't remember if this was fragrant, though I expect it was. Funny how much I overlooked in restrospect...the search continues.

esw -- glad to have you join us. Can't have too many lily friends!

Think it is impossible to ID that one. There are so many registered and unregistered ones like that. Lots of people are trying to get a really black nectary with this type of lily. It could be a bulk purchase of bulbs that the supplier bought from Holland. A fab. lily though.

Good point Ginny, It is really pretty even if it has no name. I never even thought of it from a breeder's (propagater's/botanist's?) perspective.

HALF the grocery $$ and ALL the rent. You jest. How about living on porridge, hamburger & cabbage soup for months, due to having a terrible lily craving. When I started housekeeping, had a budget. Of course. Anything unspent went into a tin for Christmas prezzies. That was until the lily craze hit. Suddenly menu changed to tons of meatless days, mainly hotdogs & sausages when we did have meat - oh yes and liver ... Lots and lots of stirfries. Cat tail sprouts, purslane, fiddleheads. Suddenly I had about half the food budget unspent every week.

It was bliss till I had a mutiny. Kids still talk about that sometimes. I had at least 30 diff. hot dog recipes.
My DH travelled a lot so there were many days when dinner was eggs etc. Even stopped buying coffee. Each tin equalled a bulb.

That was a long time ago.

Inanda...takes me back to when I was a kid....mom didn't do lilies but had too many mouths at times...
A question for you...what are the lily developers looking for, what is up and coming? (you seem pretty savvy in this arena)

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Hybridisers are trying to develop orientals/LAs/Orientpets with dark nectaries. Also trying to get lilium that are more hardy in colder zones. Plus all the new lilies .... plus lilies with stronger stems - eg Henryii. Lots of new things on the horizon.

I want a yellow Oriental.......and then Orientals with yellow/red combinations.

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

So many ways to take the lily....pretty cool.
I think I need to see more lillies....a trip to a lily grower may have to be arranged. hmmm
