Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Hmm.... from the sounds of my emails, I should have been more awake when I shipped the bulbs. Sound like my orphan worms are turning up all over the place. Where were the darn things hiding????

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Horseshoe! How can I ever thank you for the "smiles" you sent to my home?

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Wanda, you sent plenty of smiles to my house. I can hardly wait to see and smell my Monte's next year. Does all this plant addiction ever end? Don't tell me it does please cause I kinda like this waiting for blooms and figuring out where to plant everything. The only bad part of gardening as far as I am concerned is the weeding in these new beds. SO next spring I am just going to go out and tell those stupid weeds that they need to just get out of here cause I am very tired of their sponging off of me. Suppose they will listen?????

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Well, if it is a new bed with nothing in it... spray it with round up a few days before you plant and they will listen... I am still waiting for a spray that will kill weeds and not kill flowers... there is a spray that kills weeds and does not harm grass, so I don't see why they can't make one that doesn't harm flowers... I don't think it is asking too much..

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I just mulch the heck out of everything but the iris clumps. I use my grass clippings all spring & summer. Only see a few weeds despite the size of the beds. I'm adding an over layer of mulched leaves & grass right now as I ready for winter.

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Wanda, wont the leaves get all soggy?... does it matter if they get all soggy? I have an awful lot of leaves... and thought I would have to fight them off all winter... they can get a foot or two deep if I don't keep them raked off the beds... will cedar chips hurt anything? I have been using cedar shavings in my stalls lately instead of pine shavings... can I use that to mulch with?

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

fsr, Mow the grass and leaves together. Makes a wonderful fall mulch

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Hi scooterbug, thanks... I guess my hang up on using leaves and grass has been that here it would just be a wet and soggy mixture... do they get soggy on you, too? (Sorry to sound dumb, just learning, but I always thought that soggy was not good)

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

It's okay for them to get soggy! Come spring, move them away from the iris to prevent rot & let them naturally decompose in your beds. They make a good mat that discourages weeds & retains moisture in the summer. Chop them up really well with your mower & they stay in place better. Why waste them?

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Thanks Wanda and scooterbug. I am going to try this out. I just love learning something new each day! And this is sure the place to do it.

Milo, ME(Zone 4a)

am i to late wanda

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)
