Does anyone know if the pod has to be splitting open before they are ripe enough to harvest? Pods on mine have changed color to a beautiful fall red but are not splitting yet.
Butterfly Weed seeds harvesting?
I have harvested them before they split and they have germinated. I just put them in a paper bag or envelope until they dry out. I will warn you though, that they make an awful mess when you split the pods -- that silky stuff goes everywheree LOL!
If they are starting to turn color they're prolly just about ready. If you split one open and the seeds are dark I'd go ahead and collect em. I try to get them just before they split or right after but before the silk starts drying and carrying them away. If you pinch the end of the pod you can rub the seeds off without disturbing the silk and making a mess.
Ok, thanks a lot Poppysue.
