Here's a great chance for a weekend of good information and meeting folks with similar interests. I've got conflicts that weekend, but all are welcome and if you are near the area, incouraged to attend.



Anyone interested in heirloom plants of the mountain south should mark September 10-12 on their calendars. That’s when the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy has scheduled its first fall conference.

The conference---to be held at the Sustainable Mountain Agricultural Center (SMAC), in Berea, Kentucky---is open to non-members as well as members.

The three day event will consist of workshops and presentations about collecting and growing heirloom food plants; and will include a tour of the SMAC facility and a continuous seed swap. Heirloom seeds will be available for sale as well as to trade; including many Appalachian family heirlooms that are unavailable anywhere else.

Keynote speaker Bill Best will discuss some of the methods and practices used by SMAC to fulfill its mission of teaching growers how to have sustainable farms on small acreage.

Among other workshops and presentations: Dean Piearson will conduct a workshop on marketing heirlooms. Brook Elliott, AHSC’s managing director, will have a slide show on how to collect local heirlooms. Roger Postley will do a workshop on tomato growing and seed saving. John Strang will talk about heirloom fruit of the region. And Toni Eddleman will discuss in-situ raised beds, which provide the benefits of broad-row planting without the expense of constructing sidewalls and retaining devices.
