Turks Cap?

Not sure, was told this is lilium michiganense.

This is it's first year - height is about 4'

Sue - I'm not very good with species lilies but I did see a great site on them at the Michigan Lily Society's pages. Looks like michiganense has extremely recurved petals & sepals.

Thank you for that link. Good photos for comparison. This lily I have had not fully opened when I shot the first photo. Today it is fully recurved. I need to do more research to see if the turks cap and the michiganense are one and the same. So far I have read that they both grow wild in ditches and fields.

I guess the one thing I'd point out on these are that the flowers are tiny compared to other lilies even much smaller than the ole Orange Tiger lilies (L. lancifolium aka tigrinum splendens). Note the pic on that link about 1/2 way down on the right. Notice how small the flowers are compared to that guys hand?

Yes I did notice that - I would say these in my yard are probably between 3" and 4" wide.....would have to do a measurement to be sure. I think I may have L. lancifolium here!
