tiger lily legends & folk lore

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

i received a newsletter from brecks and in it it discussed some folk lore and legends concerning the tiger lily.

"The Chinese ... use the bulb of the tiger lily as a spice in gourmet soups."
"In Japan, the flower is affectionately know as 'Oniyuri', the demon lily, because of its wild colouring."

"According to legend from Korea, the tiger lily was created by a hermit-mystic who removed an arrow from a wounded tiger. The two became friends, and when the tiger died, the hermit transformed his body into a lily to preserve their friendship. Later, the hermit drowned, and the tiger lily spread down the stream looking for his lost friend. It has since spread all over the world, thanks to the love and careful care of generations of gardeners."
