Rosepoint Lace -first co-op bloom!!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Beautiful but a tad short. I'm guessing I planted them a bit deep and they'll be taller next year.

That's lovely! Fragrance? In the background...is that a cow or a cocker?? hee hee Looks like he's sniffing the flower!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

cocker - good 'ole Barney, he's my sidekick!

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Oh Laura....that one is lovely!!! I had no idea it was yellowish in color! So elegant.

Actually you're better to plant the bulbs too deep than not enough especially on taller growing ones. Lilies need to be well anchored for all those heavy blooms plus they will develop bulbets along the stem underground often so deeper gets you more offshoots in the long run. The rule of thumb is 3 times the depth of the bulb size. Some of those coop bulbs were huge!! I couldn't dig deep enough in my hard clay to get some as deep as the recommendation!!!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Very little fragrance - I'd say it's more creamy than yellow. Second one opened today. (Above opened yesterday!) The stalk is only 14"-15" high - sure hope it gets a little more vertical next year! lol (gotta bend down low to check out the smell!)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

oh brenda, you better do some reading on soil amendment for your lily bulbs. i'm afraid your bulbs will eventually rot in that clay your talking about. they like very well draining soil.

Debi - lots of peat!! I buy it by the bale here in good ole clay Kansas! Any hole around here is backfilled with a mix of peat, top soil and manure/humus (whichever I have) and usually a bit of Osmocote for good measure. Cow manure is my best friend. I tilled up a new bed after I moved here as it had gone to weeds from the previous owners. That's the best bed I have....such dark, black rich soil there now!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

brenda,
i'm worried about you girlfriend. cow manure is your best friend?
fellow d.g. gardeners i think we need to help out brenda here. anyone have time to be her best friend. i don't imagine much would be involved here. if you have a better personality and more to offer than a pile of composted manure, then please apply. ;-)

i'm starting a new thread. i don't want to hi-jack koogers...

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

LOL!!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

hijack away - always ready for a new ride!

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

kooger were you standing on your head to get that turk's picture? I like these hat shaped blooms.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

darn near!! lol

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Kooger - the contortionist in training! LOL!

That's why I like the display on my digital camera!! No weird contortionist movements here! Just tilt the lens on it's swivel and look at the display and shoot when the pic is right! Only difficulty is making sure I don't have a ton of the sky in the background causing the pic to wash out. It's an old CoolPix 950 from Nikon, but it sure does the job!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

These opened this weekend - didn't do a very good job!

That's the sky background I'm so familiar with!!!

What's the white one with the orange pollen? How cool that lemon-yellow throat is!

You're up late Kooger! I'm off to bed soon (been saying that for 2 hrs!)

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I'm a bit puzzled by 2 of my co-op bulbs. One is leucanthum or something like that, and I have to dig the other name out of the mulch, but they have the same colour! I'm going to look at the co-op thread and check out their catalog. I kinda think it's Sarabande because I thot I ordered only white, pink and red - not real partial to the yellows. I believe Sarabande was my bonus bulb. :)

edit: got it figured out. Leucanthum and Statuesque are somewhat similar and those two are next to each other looking like twins. Guess I didn't pick very well!

Well, it gives a nice full bloom look!!! I like it! So the pic of the white ones are Leucanthum and Statuesque both? Do you prefer one over the over for any reason?

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

NOt sure which one this pic is - they are quite close in colour. Will check in a bit and see if the blooms are still open.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Kooger love your lilies--but do I have to smell like cow manure to be your friend? I didn't know that was an "Iowa thing".

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Wanda - that manure thing is a 'Brenda' thing - all we get is pig smell from across the road here. Yuck! I grew up on a dairy farm so always find the pig (hog - if you're from IA, I hate that word!) smell more nauseating. :)

Blooms -been pondering that camera thing - that works great for taking the pic but just how are you going to avoid getting down to their level to smell it? lo-o-ong straw???? lol

watered this am but forgot to check on the lilies - duh!!!

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

"FORGOT TO CHECK ON THE LILIES!!" Did she say she FORGOT TO CHECK ON THE LILIES?? I feel swoonish and faint.......

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

oh boy, now I'm gonna be quartered and roasted - hey, it's a menopausal moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it's 92 deg. out there!! And humid!!! (what other excuse can I come up with?)

The yellow-throated one pictured above is definitely 'Statuesque'. Four blooms open now on 'Silk Road'. What a beauty!!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

oooooo, pretty pretty kooger. Is that a maroon and cream combo?

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Yeah, that would be close - maybe closer to white - gonna try get a better pic later.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Gotta love those lilies...

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Got a couple more pix of the 'Silk Road'. That is one awesome lily!!!

how? how? how? can you possibly forget to check your lilies?
even franklin comes over to my chair when i'm at the computer or reading and he starts to beg. well after i rattle off questions, even go outside and i get no responce, when i say "wanna go to the garden?" he'll plop down, start wagging that tail of his and head for the door. :-)

OMG! WOW! (Writing furiously...)

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Just 2 blooms will perfume my entire downstairs! And you can smell them from 4-5ft away in the garden, more if the breeze is right!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Hmmm. Would that conteract my DH boots and dogs after a hunting trip? Darn, wrong season.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

it's definitely a keeper!! This one is from Brenda's co-op and it has 4 buds on it - the most of any first year lilies I've ever grown. Absolutely gorgeous blooms - doesn't that pic in the field of lilies just blow you away! That must be what heaven looks like to us fanatics!!!! :)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

yep, i didn't get any pictures of mine. :-( but i was lucky enough to get it from wayside at 70% off in may of 2003. this year there was 6 buds.

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Here is what you can look forward to next year. 15 flowers!
