Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

These photos are about 2 weeks old so the garden is fuller now, but I think his garden down in Kentucky is one of the purddiest I've seen this year.

The first photo is of several rows of Ford Hook lima beans.

The photo below is 'Kentucky Wonder' pole beans. My brother says the beans are vinin up past the tips of the tee pees now, into the air!

TC, now you can't get much better than that. Looks like the ideal garden which is well kept. Where are the Tomatoes? LOL Does he live near you or back here in Kentucky? We have to get him started on Heirloom Tomatoes!

He lives in KY Gary. I wish he did live up here!

I think he may be joinin DG soon!

TC, are the white bags hanging around the perimeter to deter deer?
Wonder how they've worked for him? Deer have invaded my garden again this year, and hubby hasn't had time to put up the electric fence yet.

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Melissa, interesting that you ask just now...

I was chattin with my brother a minute ago and I asked him if the "bag fence" had helped keep deer out. He said that it seems to have helped some, he hasn't noticed as many deer prints in the garden. But he said it doesn't seem to help keep the groundhogs out.

If it ain't one critter, you can count on another one to come along soon!

Yes, that is definitely the truth. I have 20 beautiful rows of bean sticks to prove it.

They watch them as closely as I do I think, because as soon as they bloomed and started producing little beans, they mowed them down in one night.

So far they're leaving the tomatoes and corn alone!

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Melissa, that's just awful! And you described just what it is they do "mow them down!"

I sure hope they leave the maters and corn alone too!

Very nice do you have pics of cauliflower, brocc, cabage, onions, and all the normal stuff. Ernie

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

I'm not sure if he is growin or has pix of all the veggies you mentioned Ernie. I'll ask and post em if he has em.

I didn't take the photos of his garden, he did and sent em to me.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Yep, now that's a downright purty garden! (And I luv Forkhooks!!!)

He's got his hands full with that garden. (So what's his address? Looks like a nice place for a midnite visit!) ;>)

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Hey Shoe,

Whats a "forkhook", sumpin crooked ya use to catch pan fish with? ;~)

My, I reckon I'll just keep his address a secret for now. I don't believe my brother needs anymore critters prowlin around in his garden, especially those of the two-legged variety that show up at midnite. :~0

"Forkhook" :
(1)*a utensil often-times used when eating lima beans/butter beans, especially one with a long handle so the diner can more easily reach to another's bowl for a "secret scoop" while other diner is not looking.

(2) a specialized fork designed for lima/butter bean eating, usually with a recurve on the ends so one can really pile on the bounty. It is commonly accepted as being designated as the "utensil that replaced the peas-and-honey-on-a-knife technique".

*(3)a misnomer, often-times confused with Fordhook lima/butter bean.

TC cool you must have spent time in Pearl did you do the blue and gold switch thing. I did tin cans and escorts with a little time on a troop transport actually did the trans port thing first. By the way I used to like to go into the sonar room and play find the sub on the simulator lol an x box so to speak.

I remember the first time we let off depth charges I almost wet my pants I was on the fantail enjoying and all of a sudden it was whup whup and black smoke out the stack a steering adjustment and off they went one by one set shallow and sure threw the water in the air and sounded like the fantail would fall off. I really thought those K gun things were cool to I think thats what they were called. Ernie

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Yep, we did the blue/gold crew switcheroo thing. I was a sonar tech by the way.

Headin down to KY today folks. Visitin family and friends. Then trekkin a little further south on Thursday to Mississippi for a short stay with my mentor Felder Rushing. Headin back up this way on Monday the 19th. I may be checkin in here from time to time so y'all best behave. ;~)
