Hello from Council Bluffs, Iowa

southwestern, IA(Zone 5a)

Well this looked like the place to start. I am a beginner at gardening and hope to question everyone to death with questions that are second nature to many of you. I do know the few forums I have read at this point have already been quite helpful and I plan to spend a great deal of time here reading as much as I can.

Thank you all in advance,
Jos

Hi from another Iowan! Saw you posting on the weather thread and wondered if you were new. Welcome and so glad to get another Iowan. We get down your way once in awhile, bought a van down there at the big chevy dealer -name escapes me right now. As for picking brains, there's always someone who knows the answers around here (not me, lol). What's your loves (regarding plants!) and wishes? So glad you joined us! Laura

The first year I planted anything was just last year. I put in salvia (may night) and silver mounds. I really had no clue what I was doing(still don't really). I fell in love with both of them. They compliment each other really well and this year they came back in and looked unbelieveable until this past weeks storms but seem to be recovering quite nicely. So at the moment they are my favorites but I see so much more out there I like that I plan to start experimenting alot more. Which I already have with some dwarf burning bushes..verdict is still out on them.

Thank you for the welcome Laura. I am sure to see you again soon.

Hi Jos,

Welcome from the West Coast. There are so many people here from Iowa now, so you should be able to get a lot of local information regarding what plants grow well in your area.

Hello from a new Arizona member. We will be in Council Bluffs the weekend of July 8 thru 11 for the National Depression Glass show and would appreciate any "must see" plant places to visit. We already plan to go to Aridlands in Glenwood - we love their place in Tucson. Any other great places to visit? Our main interests are cactus, Sansevieria, Hoya, African Violets and other Gesnerias. Thanks, Harold

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
I have so much I want to ask or show you all but I don't have a camera right now. I just bought one of the disposable ones that says they can make a disk from it. Hopefully that works and I will be able to post some pictures soon.

The convention will be really close to a few spots you may enjoy.
If you dont mind a little stroll we have a trails center less than a mile away from the MidAmerica center...it's mostly wildflowers (which I Love). Wild flowers are everywhere and just beautiful. I was just there yesterday as a matter of fact.

Second not too far from the MidAmerica center (maybe 5-10 min) in Omaha, NE is Lauritzen Gardens. Here is their website.

Depending on how much time you you spend here..I suggest stopping at the Omaha Zoo (right up the street from Lauritzen Gardens) It's one of the best in the country. I have lived here all of my life and not a year goes by that I miss it.!

Sure hope you enjoy the trip up here. Its not a big metro area but there is plenty to do.

Oh PS...if you like to gamble there are 3 casino's close to the MidAmerica Center. I recommend Ameristar for both gambling and food.
Have a safe and happy trip!
