Luffa

Grand Rapids, MI(Zone 6a)

I have never grown luffa before and recieved a grant from the State of Michigan to grow a garden with my day care kids that I take care of. I thought that luffas sounded kind of neat for the kids as one of the many things we are trying to grow. We started them indoors a week and 3 days ago in the burpee ultimate growing system. They are getting quite big and we can see that the roots are coming out the bottom of the plant tray. Any suggestions as to what I should do?? Are they going to survive like this for at least 3 more weeks? It is still to cold to put them out and we are no where near our last frost.

If you keep them real close to the lights they may stay small and bushy, which is good. If they have to struggle to get light (such as following the light in the window), they will get very tall and leggy. If you can put them under lights, and keep feeding them they will get big anyway, but you are going to have one tangled mess when they decide to vine. Hopefully it won't be for another couple of weeks for you.. I don't know what else to say. Several of my seedlings got wilt really bad and just croaked. So, I am starting over and soaking and planting them directly into the ground in a couple of days. Good luck.. hope someone else that grows inside can help you. A

would they tolerate being transplanted into a pot before I put them in the ground?

Yes if they can't go out for another three weeks, then I suggest putting them into larger individual pots, the deeper the better so the main root can develop.

From your photo you still have some time left before they put on their 3rd and 4th leave, then begin to vine out, but they still need some root growing room.
