Has anyone had any experience? Can you save pollen from an early bloomer to pollinate a later bloomer?
Hybridizing daylilies
Yes, you can. I pluck the anthers from the desired bloom with tweezers and let them dry for a day. I put them in paper cupcake liners and let them dry on my kitchen countertop. The next day I pack them in the tiny zip-loc baggies with cultivar name, and date to store in the freezer.
To use take out what you need and return the rest of the pollen to the freezer. You only need to let it warm up for a few minutes and it's ready to use.
Frozen pollen will store at least for a year... maybe longer. You can also store it for a shorter period in the refrigerator.
Check out the Daylily forum. There are some super hybridizers there who would be glad to offer advice.
