Sweet Potato Vine leaves turning yellow?

Franklin, LA(Zone 9b)

i've got a sweet potato vine (not sure of the variety) that someone gave me as a cutting about 4 months ago
it's lived in a glass of water on my bathroom window since i got it and it flowered and has been doing really well
but lately (in the last month orso) the leaves around the bottom have been turning yellow and dying
i pull them off as they get yellow, and it just keeps happening..
is it maybe getting too much water?
would putting it in dirt maybe fix this problem?

I have several sweet potato vines in my yard, bright green/yellow, green, burgundy and some varigated green, cream and pink. I know the varigated ones will turn plain ole green as they get more mature. As forgiving as these vines are, I would think they want to get into some good ole soil to continue to survive.

that's what i was thinking...
but i've always just grown sweet potatoes and stuff in a jar of water and had it work out just fine... so i figured i'd ask to see if maybe there could be something else going on here other than just overwatering

thanx :)
