IRIS ARRIVED! bulb tool needed!!

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

My 90 dutch iris from the co- op just arrived. What is everyones favorite tool for planting Iris bulbs? And anything I should give them to make them happy in their new home? As you can see, I am a very new gardener.
Thanks,
Bambi

Banbi,

I use a long handle bulb planter, the kind you step on
& twist so the dirt comes out
in a plug. You plant the bulb &
replace the plug of dirt in the
hole. This will really save your back,so it is well worth the money.

I also was lucky enough to obtain some iris bulbs from a coop this fall. Where I want to put them will not be a flower garden until spring. Do you think it is ok to winter them over not planted? I would hate to loose them, but it is late to be planting bulbs here in zone 4 I would think.
Thanks,

epazota, better get them in the ground! Never too late as long as the ground can be worked. They could shrivel up and die in storage.

Thanks for the advice. I will work on digging them in this weekend! It is supposed to turn cold soon;-(
